Oh, he found out, and he most certainly isn't happy about it.

I don't want to spoil too much, but I will say stuff like that is one of the ongoing themes. Core Crisis is a good vs. evil story, as I feel Transformers should be, but it's one that acknowledges that it's not always easy to make the right choice, to know how far is too far, and that good people sometimes go down the wrong path.

I may be looking too far into it, but seeing the Mass-produced Lynx made me think of the cut content from FFVII, with the Red XIII clones that Hojo was gonna make.

Yeah if Optimus wasn't regretting being on board with this plan to begin with, he is now.

Definitely. Optimus may be the "Cloud" of this comic, but they're really quite different.

I wanted something to use for large pipes. I was going to spray paint them (and may do that eventually), but I don't have a good setup to do that at the moment. So I figured "Meh. Good enough for now." :)

You know, seeing how much the power they just took out. The loss of energon they have in constant transformer shows makes since.

There's going to be quite a number of disgruntled workers that weren't there at the time that just lost their jobs.

I was hoping someone would post that! :D

This brings up something that perhaps I should have addressed earlier, namely how energon works in the Core Crisis universe. Like the expanded intro in my first post, it's not required reading to follow the comic, but for those who may be interested, it should give a better understanding of the setting and events. Especially since the nature of energon isn't consistent throughout the franchise.

Core Crisis Cybetronian technology works much like the Cybetronians themselves, albeit simplified in most cases, which means it runs on energon. The good thing about this is that compared the energy sources we use here on real-world Earth, a little goes a long way. Simple devices can be powered for quite some time on very small quantities, and things such as powerful, portable energy weapons, force fields, FTL drives, and of course giant, super-complex robots are much easier to power with it. And although volatile, pollution from using it is minimal (Cybertron is quite polluted, but that's due to industry in general), and you don't have to worry about harmful radiation either.

The downside is scarcity. Cybtertron is the only known place in universe where natural deposits are found. Unfortunately the Quintessons pilfered much of that during their occupation of the planet, which led to an energy crisis after the natives drove them off, which in turn led to the Great War. You can't convert other resources into it like they did in G1, and thus far no one has been able to develop a synthetic version.

Energon deposits are found in solid and liquid form. The solid, crystalline state was by far the more common of the two until the discovery of Core Energon. Liquid state energon is more volatile, but much easier to covert into its energy form, which has to be done in order to actually power anything. The energy form also has certain properties that electricity doesn't, which is how you get things like Megatron's Energon mace. You can also turn it into a gas, but the only practical use for that is electronic warfare.

While storage cells containing energy-form energon exist and are definitely used, for tech with high energy usage, it's much more efficient in terms of space and longevity to use a liquid to energy converter. A hand-held scanner or a little cleaning drone work fine on power cells; stuff like Transformers themselves, FTL drives, etc ..... not so much. The only problem with these converters is that they are complicated and expensive to produce if you want something that's safe. This is why the majority of energy weapons in this comic, aside from mobile artillery, don't have their own power supply, but draw power from the bot using them (all of whom have power ports their hands in addition to any others). Yes, this does mean extended usage of said weapons could literally kill them (though obviously something like Megatron's fusion cannon would do that a lot faster than Bumblebee's blaster).

This brings us to the matter of the power grid. Extraction Plants themselves don't convert liquid to energy. The massive converters that do so are located at other facilities called - surprise, surprise! - Conversion Plants. The idea is that if there something happened to destroy the Extraction Plant, the power grid would be fine for a while. Certainly until they could divert enough energy from another grid for daily life and/or bring more raw energon from another area. Unfortunately for those in the Iacon Metroplex (not be confused with the titan), Extraction Plant 08 exploding caused the destruction of the Conversion Plant that powered their grid. Exactly why that happened is something that will be addressed in the Chapter 2.

If anyone's wondering, yes, a Cybertronian can hook up to and power themselves via a grid. That's what they do when in "sleep mode," or if they're going to be stationary for an extended period of time. To stay connected and mobile though, they'd have to use a cable like an Evangelion.

Hmmm. That ended up being longer than I intended. Maybe I put too much thought into this. :)

You're right. I mean, they're better off than the bots who were in the area at the time, but the economic impact is going to be felt by many.

Oh yeah. And although not shown there, the shockwaves caused a lot of destruction too.

So Elita may have been the one to talk Optimus into doing this? Well this is making an already bad situation worse.

Yes, it was Elita. Something happened in their past that he feels guilty about, enough that she was able talk him into taking the job. Their relationship has been tense at best since then. Naturally this won't help that.

Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read this comic.

    A scene from Chapter 2:

    IMG_2980.JPG

Chapter 2 is going to be pretty different from Chapter 1. Whereas Chapter 1 took place a short span of time in a single area and was largely action, Chapter 2 takes place in several locations over the rest of the day after the explosion, is mostly dialogue-driven, and several episodes focus on new (to this comic, anyway) characters. The fallout from the events in the first chapter needs to be addressed, characters need to be introduced, things need to be set in motion, etc. Gunfire and explosions will resume in Chapter 3. ;)

The script for this chapter is done, as well as the photos for all but one episode. That episode is kind of a snag for me because the "set" is going to be used again in Chapter 3, and I don't want to have to put it back together again, so I'll want to write the script for those parts and do the photos at the same time I do this episode. It helps with this sort of thing that I use simple props, but it can take a surprising amount of time to get things assembled to my satisfaction for some scenes.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do character bios for this one, even though I have photos for most of them already. Maybe just some quick explanatory text before each episode for anything about the characters you'll need to know to understand what's going on. We'll see.

Though he fills a similar role to Cloud, he's definitely still Optimus.

Wheeljack is fun to write. Very much based on TFP Wheeljack rather than G1. He has a certain bravado that works well here, I think. He can be a bit of a jerk, but like the rest of the time, he's still trying to do what he believes is right. There are going to be some interesting interactions between him and Optimus in the future.

Pears are delicious! Despair, not so much. But pears, definitely.
