I really want a display with glass doors and it looks like detolfs are the best choice. Unfortunately the closest Ikea is 4 hours from me and shipping is $99. The other kicker is I only need 1 detolf. So I am cruising craigslist, but slim pickings.

For those who have concerns regarding Ikea's expedits, you don't have to worry anymore..

The Kallax is just a cheaper version - thinner, with rounded corners to make it more "kid friendly". Whatever. :rolleyes2

I have several Expedits and I love them. This bugs me because my boyfriend and I wanted to create a solid wall of Expedits when we moved later in the year, and the Kallax probably won't look right with them.

Question for detolf owners. Would anyone have any suggestions on locks or latches that would work for child proofing? Any ideas would be great!

Anybody else besides Brricy had any experiences with the Ikea Billy Bookcases? I'm moving into a new townhouse in June. One of my spare bedrooms will be used as the collection room.

I really like that. Approximately how much did that end up setting you back?

Thanks Superquad7! With the glass door and glass shelves, the two Billy (Width: 80 cm, Depth: 39 cm, Height: 202 cm) set me back by around USD 700.

I'm based in Singapore though so not sure if it's the same price in the States.

In the US, the Billy bookcases that I've been looking at are $80 each at Ikea. The glass shelves are $10 each. The Morebo doors are $35 each. For one bookcase with doors and glass shelves, that will run close to $200.
I'm going back to Ikea after I move in my new place and get two or three bookcases only. I'll get the glass shelves and doors later.

    Hi All,

Im from singapore..so costs listed will be in SGD..
i made some el cheapo display floating shelves from the following materials
Ikea EKBY LAIVA Shelves $4 each
Ikea EKBY STÖDIS Brackets $1 each

each shelf will consist of 2 brackets and one shelf board so thats $6 bucks each..
will show some pics when i get home tonight..

after mounting the shelves i measure the distances and go to a local acrylic store to order custom acrylic sheets (2mm thick will do) and use foam tape to make a channel for the acrylic pieces to slide in and out..

acrylic sheets cost like $4 to $8 a piece depending on the size..

Acrylic sheets were used to keep out the dust

Foam tape was stuck on at intervals to keep the acrylic sheets in place..

Most sports memorabilia shops sell them for pretty cheap, but they're not very big. Anything larger than a G1 Insecticon probably wouldn't fit. That's a really good idea for Mini-Cars, though!

Personally, I've always had luck with ClosetMaid Organizers. They're sold for pretty cheap at Target and they're pretty awesome. They're very roomy and, while there's no glass cover so you do have to dust, they do a good job of displaying figures. Also, they're available in different sizes, so you don't have to get one that's too big for your collection, and you won't have to buy several if you have a big collection (though they do look nice side-by-side if you choose to buy several). Just a forewarning, if you buy one that's supposedly wood, it's not all wood. Just the outer frame is. Also, if you get one in black, the darker figures kind of disappear. Anyway, here are a few examples:

ClosetMaid 3 Shelf Organizer White : Target

ClosetMaid 15 Unit Organizer Espresso : Target

ClosetMaid 6-Cube Organizer - Dark Cherry : Target

For those of you looking for some nice acrylic risers this site has them in all shapes and sizes. They sell them as singles and in sets of 3-6. Short, wide, long, tall, stepped etc. I've yet to use them but plan on it. They seem to have some reasonable prices too!!
