In the real world we all live in, they most assuredly are, and I highly recommend donating to conservation efforts if you can afford to. But the wonderful thing about fiction is I don't have to completely adhere to the rules of our reality. Suppose, with the advanced technology left behind on Gaea, conservation efforts for endangered species across the globe proved more wildly successful than anyone could have dreamed. Suppose that without humanity in the picture now, an equilibrium has been established once again... Some more nature trivia-- Zebras and Ostriches do tend to travel together to compensate for each other's weaknesses and protect themselves from predators. Oxpeckers serve a similar role to Ostriches in this case, serving as early warning systems for their hosts, but it's unclear if their relationship is mutualistic or parasitic given their tendency to peck at open wounds.
