I’m in the same boat! Joined around ROTF, hit my peak during Transformers: Prime, then tapered off around AOE. Bumblebee made me excited about Transformers again, and pair that with Siege and the Vintage G1 reissues, I’m at my own personal Transformers renaissance and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

The problem with that is, we never really had a proper Optimus vs Megatron moment in the film. The closest we got was in the first film, however, that was filled with shaky cam and way too many cuts to the military. I want to see other villains and heroes take the big screen of course, but I don't want to be cheated out of a good traditional Autobots vs Decepticons film led respectively by Prime and Megs either.

I feel like the Forest Fight is that moment. You have Optimus being all Optimusy. You’ve got one of the best quotes in the entire movie series in that fight as well as having the best fight choreography.

I’m certainly ready to put moments like “One Shall Stand” to bed. But I understand your point of view too. It would be nice to have a good movie like Bumblebee with a filled out G1 cast. But after that, I would like to see different stories.

That fight was the second closest thing to that moment, sure you have Optimus being Optimus by defending Sam alone and fighting until the end no matter how dire the situation seemed. But it wasn't really a 'Optimus vs Megatron' moment because he was fighting Grindor and Starscream as well - Megatron was the one that killed Optimus at the end of that fight but really anyone could've just done that, it wasn't really a fair fight so this was more of an Optimus moment than any type of traditional rivalry or fight between the leaders of the two factions.

I agree with Music that the first movie battle was more closer to that moment since Megatron has more characterization during that act by being tyrannical and chaotic rather than just part of a three-bot fight. All the cons just sort of got pushed around and Megatron just finished him off, I do believe that he held his traditional traits of taking any advantage of the situation to kill Prime (since Prime was worried about Sam) and was acting arrogant at the end of the fight but during the fight he didn't show much of that.

people are taking this with very wishfull thinking. "New Storytelling Experience" could mean anything, or nothing at all. It could only be a soft reboot, or it could just be a commentary on changing the themes and presentation of the films. Until we see something that directly contradicts the originals, like Megatron being directly involved, there's no point getting excited.

As far as the Netflix show, it could go either way. We could get something like Voltron, or we could get something like She-Ra or Godzilla.

A reset was confirmed to be coming after Bumblebee at last year's Toyfair. The only reason they didnt use the term reboot is because they dont want to close out the possibility of revisiting bayformers even though it is pretty obvious they dont ever want to again thanks to TLK.

and there already are massive contradictions between bumblebee and the bayverse. Even overlooking the fact Bumblebee is somehow on Earth during WWII and can't talk, 40 years before he first arrives on Earth with the ability to talk, based on DOTM the Decepticons were around since no later than the 1960s as it's pretty much implied they used human allies to stop the Apollo missions to the moon. One of those Decepticons being Soundwave, raising the question as to why Shatter and Dropkick needed some random ass dish to beam a signal when they could have just asked Soundwave to take care of that.

You can't argue that the movies didn't infuse a lot of new fans, although you can argue if they're still here.
But I'd hardly say TFs were dying - Classics had launched hard, and was cut off only because it was meant as a short "filler" line until the movie toys launched. Classics eventually became Generations, which Hasbro has acknowledged as their "main" TF line as of at least a few years ago.

As for the "you should celebrate what's to come, instead of the death of something" you have to take into account that this thing that so many had so disliked for so long had to die, before we could get something better.

Hasbro is aiming for the current crowd most, not so much the G1'ers and bayverse fans. If they can catch either it's a bonus but not a priority. There's a lot of G1 nods as a reemphasized focus on brand recognition, they want a kid 10 years from now to still be able to generally recognize any new iteration of let's say Bumblebee or Prime.

The current movie audiences were pretty receptive to the Bumblebee movie. That's what steered Hasbro into the direction they're going into now. I'm a fan of both G1 and Bayverse. I enjoyed Bumblebee more than Bayverse. It's not that Hasbro is killing off anything, they're just going in the direction the current audience seems receptive to. We had 10 years of Bayverse and TLK showed that it was time for a change.

There's somewhat of a twist involved. Yes Classics was only intended as a filler line. When movie toy sales shot through the roof, retailers requested more Transformers with realistic vehicle modes(they didn't specifically request more movie figures IIRC, just for whatever future line could come). At the time, the 1st movie line was either ending or already over. Hasbro then made Universe/Classics 2.0 to address retailer desire for more realistic alternate modes. The rest is history because as we know, it led to Generations which continue to today.

I may have gotten some things wrong, it's been years since I read about this and discussed it.

Shin, this mean if tides change enough we'll get more A/E/C homages? I still consider that the default Scattorshot and Landmine

Yeah, Armada was my introduction to the franchise, but I left at the start of Energon because even as the target market for Hasbro, I could tell the Energon show was shit. The movies brought me back, though regrettably not before I missed out on all the good figures from Cybertron and Classics (I'm still playing catch-up there).

But Transformers was hardly doing poorly - the movies simply made them a massive part of pop culture instead of just another media-driven toyline.

    Yup.

And that's why the push to G1 - the designs are truly timeless because if nothing else, all major incarnations of the core characters like Prime and Megatron typically bear signature traits that tie back to the original 80s designs.

I think a lot of this has to do with people being forced to accept that there always was more to the franchise than just their beloved Bayformers.

The Cybertron toy sales were good. The brand wasn't doing bad at all. However good the sales were for the Armada trilogy didn't compare to the 2007 movie though. The 2007 movie toy sales blew away the Armada trilogy sales substantially. Crunching numbers alone was enough to see why Hasbro wanted more movies.

I do wonder; if ROTF hadn't been kneecapped by the writer's strike, how much better would it have been?

I would hope so I would love for new A/E/C homages or even a reboot as Armada was what really got me into transformers after my older sister introduced me to them. Armada will always be my favorite of the UT.

Oh, no question, Armada era sales were good, but movie sales were on levels unheard of since G1 itself. It's just important to remind people that the brand was doing just fine without the films back before 2007.

Have you seen the revealed prototype hardcopy of the Armada Prime at Wonderfest? It looks gorgeous and will have super mode - there are fold out fists hidden in the back of the legs and a seam running straight down the middle of the codpiece.

I have and feel the same way. I had hoped that it would be part of a future chapter of WFC due to their possibly being hidden Combat ports on him but he will most likely get released through Hasbro pulse or so I hope.

    Probably not.
There's nothing wrong with rotf that any writer could have made better.

You are talking about the movie where a robot was humping a person's leg and another robot was seen with a pair of metal testicles, right?
