These covers don't really add much for me. Both stylistically and in terms of their content, they're way too close to scenes we've already seen - any of them could have been used in the continuity that's just ended.

I doubt that visually you'd ever be able to discern differences between continuities based on art alone (outside the obvious design changes). The same could be said about IDW 1.0 and Dreamwave.

I'd argue that there was exactly such a leap in style between Dreamwave and IDW - the early covers featured more detailed, realistic bots and earthier colours. It immediately struck me at the time and was part of the reason why, having bypassed Dreamwave, I jumped on board the IDW continuity.

TBH the only thing setting those covers apart are WFC:S designs on bots. Really.

Oh yes, it absolutely didn't work for me with their attempts to make Decepticons anywhere close to justified and likeable so late in their continuity.

It was like asking me to empathize and have compassion for a war trauma survivor... Of a concentration camp guard service.

Forgive me for not caring how poor and hurt they are. Gee I wonder why...

They need to start in a different way for this to work. After -ations and AHM the "too evil" bar for the Decepticon faction was set too high.

No. Just no. When the Transformers stopped looking like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow man, then Dreamwave was over.

Okay yeah, obviously you can tell the difference between Alex Milne and Pat Lee. But if you couldn't for some reason, Dreamwave, IDW 1.0 and IDW 2.0 all have covers of Optimus Prime in a stoic pose with some variation of his evergreen design, and thus you wouldn't be able to glean much about the differences between the runs just by the covers alone.

To dial it back to my main point, though, these new covers don't really, in any way, indicate much in the way of a stylistic departure, or fresh ideas. I'm not suggesting they should give away the nuances of the plot, but it seems maybe somewhat ... wise (?) to be signalling BRAND NEW START as loudly as possible right now, rather than 'subtle iteration on existing tropes'.

I'd suggest that IDW managed that back in the day by dialling back the bright primary colours and purse-grabbing poses, putting ED Su's painterly style front and centre, and featuring their young human cast on some of the covers. The branding immediately made Dreamwave's mallow-men look like yesterday's news. As it stands, I can't really believe anyone will see these covers in a comic shop and twig that this is a bold new phase.

I think some of that comes from reboot coming from the same house, using artists that are the same, or have similar styles as before as well as leaning hard back into the old G1 inspired designs. Dreamwave was a thing because it returned to those old designs. IDW was once upon a time a new house.

It'd be way easier if this was going in a new direction (i.e. Animated, Unicron Trilogy, Prime), or they just handed everything off to a out-there artist with a very fresh or distinct style, but I think a lot of this looking like a rehash artwise is that it kinda is.

Ah. Yes, you're completly right on that count. But standing heroically in stoic poses is a key componant of Optimus's personality.

Can we shame Pat Lee (and his uncredited sweatshop artists) for forcing Optimus into such unhealthy nutritional habits?

Yes, and also for supporting stereotypical robot body norms that aren’t archievable to the average ‘bot.

Tonight the part of Windblade will be played by Iron Factory's Maiden. Let's give her a big hand!

Never read the Dreamwave comics (I think, I have hazy memories of a story with minicons and marshmallow armada optimus), During that time I was a young whippersnapper who thought G1 was "a kids show" while Transformers: Dragonball Z Cybertron was "mature".
