I think I think the angle they're taking is that it was a different kind of world pre-war. And IDW one, pre-war Cybertron was still a crapsack world run by fascists that, as seen in the pages of Lost Light, would have gone on to have an even worse impact on the rest of the Galaxy then if the Decepticon Uprising had never happened. With shockwave having vents in back in time and intentionally orchestrating events to play out in such a manner as to undermine the concepts of faith and belief. In the reboot Cybertron seems to be an actual Utopia as opposed to an overt dystopia. Granted I'm sure there are cracks beneath the surface, I mean the war breaks out. But just the fact that it's a galactic Hub of trade and culture is itself a huge difference.

What if the key difference in this universe ends up being that Onyx Prime was actually onyx and not Shockwave? I know that is almost guaranteed to not be a plot point, but that is literally one change that could explain the entire difference between the first universe and this one

Checked out the Rogue Trooper mini the incoming writer Brian Ruckley did for IDW, and for what it's worth, it was certainly serviceable... but it was nothing more than that.

They would still have to be beholden to everything that came before Onyx like the Guiding Hand, and I really doubt they'll want to be. There's going to be a lot more than just one "key difference", I think.

I think I might put his books on hold at the library. I do like me some mid-00s grimdark fantasy.

Definitely not the way they go IMO but would love that as a "what if?" kind of story one day. Not sure if there is anything past that but really interesting world building could be done with that.

Cautiously optimistic. I loved phase 2 IDW, but it was growing a bit tired by the time Unicron came to town. While I do wish they'd broaden the cast beyond the hits, the concept of a pre-was utupian Cybertron piques my interest. I have no frame of reference of what to expect from the new author, though. I've been told he leans towards the grimdark end of the spectrum. Is this the case?

Yesssssss. You know what would be cool? If there were a number of wild card new characters. That way, with build-up, we could care about them and their choices wouldn't be set in stone , so we could be surprised by thier affiliations, etc.

I'm fully on board. I'm really interested to see what directions the personalities of the characters go.

I think mostly I just know what I don't want: A prequel-esque scenario that focuses on labor and trade disputes featuring bland, uninteresting characters. We already had that in the Star Wars prequels.

Wonder if we'll get to see Optimus and Elita together? Or Megs and Optiums debating at Mcadams? or Campaigning?

I think they’ll avoid Megatron as Robo-Hitler at all costs because what really sank that story was the enormity of the crimes vice the character rebuilding they were trying to do. I’m hoping they keep the multilayered Megatron.

Since a big part of this is world-building and setting up the war, I hope we have, interspersed with the main narrative with spotlight-ish stories focusing on varous major and minor characters in thier lives leading up to the war.

New covers by incoming artists Ron Joseph (a number of Hasbroverse IDW titles), Anna Malkova (artist for indy game dev RJ Games out of Caprese) and some guy ehh... Nick Roachay? Must be french.

Now these are just covers, so I don't know how the actual artist breakdown goes yet.

Roche's cover is colored by Josh Burcham, naturally.

I know it's stylized, but there's something intrinsically unnerving about the stumpy legs on Windblade and Bumblebee. Reminds me of Cotton Hill.

I'm more interested in whether the mural behind them (depicting Megatron already as a breaker of chains) exists in universe
