With the exception of the first wave of TR, I've been quite dissatisfied with the paint apps on the little headmaster guys' robot modes. The head modes all look great, but the bot modes (at least out of the ones I own) are completely stark. I'll walk you through what I did for each of them Furos and Grax These two are just stock, since they're lovely as they are Monxo I've painted his face in red, and added a spot of yellow to the molding in the centre of his chest. Makes a world of difference from the detail-sucking off white he used to be. Also, this is the only one where I've painted the head mode as well. The red looked good, but I wanted his face and visor to be two different colours. So, I took inspiration from Fansproject's Quadruple U and painted it Tamiya Gun Metal. Stylor If any of the titanmasters needed paint, it was this guy. Went for the modern IDW look, with dabs of blue and orange on his face, as well as lots of silver all over the place. Love how he turned out. Blowpipe This one really didn't need much. Visor and face colours are the reverse of Triggerhappy's, and I decided to panel-line him a bit with a black Gundam Marker. Again, quite pleased with the result. Revolver I've seen a few people modding Sixshot by cutting his brow to a more angry angle, and I think that mod is absolutely necessary to the toy, but painting up Revolver is just as important from my point of view. Apparently, Revolver's design comes from one of Sixshot's victims, named Jack, from The Headmasters cartoon. Jack is also marigold and blue in that show, so I didn't have a lot to go on for my painting of the teal and white titanmasters. I decided to just mimic the colour placement, instead of the colours themselves, and call it a day. This one turned out okay, but I'm tempted to add more. Daburu This guy I also had to look up on TFwiki. His one eyed tiger man design comes from White Leo, another The Headmasters character, and I love how bonkers he is. Eye patch was done with a Gundam Marker, the rest was paint. This guy makes my day every time I see him. Sorry for being so long winded, but I just love gushing about Transformers, especially ones I've painted. C&Cs more than welcome, hope you enjoyed.
After wave 1, the titan masters lost alot of paint. These look really good, especially stylor and revolver.
Neato! Any recommendations for the paint on the smaller faces, and how you applied it? I once tried to paint a Deluxe figure's face with acryllics and a brush, and pretty much ruined the figure...I'd be worried I'd just end up with a big glob of paint on the TR's little head.
These look great. One thing I've liked with the Takara Headmasters is the outside of the arms are painted so it looks like the head is more unified in head mode.
I know what you mean. I've been painting figures for about seven years now, and I only recently got any good at doing faces. Especially ones this small. I used Tamiya paints and a brush, working in layers so that I do the most recessed detail (cheeks) first and the most pronounced detail (eyes/visor and helmet) last. As an example, Revolver's eyes were a particular pain in the ass. It wasn't possible for me to not paint the area around his eyes, so before the paint dries I used an x-acto knife (extremely lightly) scrape off the extra paint. It isn't an ideal method. If I had good vinyl masking tape, I would mask it, and I'd recommend the same.
Just a quick little addendum here, since I got Galvatron today; Nucleon Basically the Legends version with slightly more silver. Big improvement!
Well, it's been forever, but I have more for you Jumpstarters Flameout at least had his visor painted, but poor Freezeout got nothing. So, a Tamiya Blue visor on Freezeout, a Chrome Silver face for both and a dash of Red on each torso livens them up nicely Apeface It really bites that some of the individually sold Titanmasters didn't get any paint on them, but then I'd have nothing to talk about if Hasbro was flawless. So, some red and silver on little Spasma, and some red on Apeface's wings. Snapdragon I'm amazed Hasbro overlooked this guy. I mean, they did the other Horrorcon, and they had a T Rex mold with a faceplate (Clobber, the basis for this custom), so why did they do Overkill? Also, can I get a Grotusque up in here? Anyway, this guy was my first use of an airbrush for the base white. He really needs to be redone. The paint just keeps falling off him. Nucleon Since my last post of this guy, I got the Reprolabels kit, so he needed some purple paint to try to make the helmet fit in better. Galvatron took way too much time, effort, and money to make decent man. I'm happy with him now though.
These are amazing! Did you have a hard time with the paint running into seams and detail in the molding? I'd like to try some of these ideas myself, but the only paint I have is kinda runny. As for Grotusque, I feel like you could kitbash a pretty decent one out of the three different decoes of the Crashbash mold (Crashkitbash?), but you're already using that for Snapdragon, so that might be one too many uses of that mold for one collection. ^^;
That was my exact problem, lol. I didn't have pipettes to measure the thinner, so I used way too much. As for Grotusque, maybe a modified Fangry is the way to go? Thanks for the idea though, I'll keep you posted if anything comes to fruition!
Been a while, but I've got a few more for you. Some of these are just updates, but I thought they warranted posting Lione/Sawback Lione's vehicle mode looked absolutely dreadful out of the packaging. Now, he has this weird Flash Gordon Hovercycle going on, but I'm a much bigger fan. Overlord I can understand that Overlord's face was black to make it more interchangeable with his fellow Phase-Sixer; Sky Shadow. But, since I don't have that toy, here's a decent match of blue paint. Apeface Since last I posted, this guy got purple hands and feet as well as silver teeth and guns. Not much, but I like it. In future, I may redo Snapdragon, but I'm in no hurry.
Slugslinger/Caliburst I was bewildered when neither the American or Japanese release of this guy had the G1 toy accurate visor instead of two seperate eyes. G1 was one of my first Transformers, so this felt as necessary as adding the silver on his chest. The visor is a scratch built piece of some laminate stock from Staples. I used Tamiya X-7 red, and am very happy with him.
Baah! Unprecedented Update! Nightbeat So maybe it's been a month or nine...Moving on! I never intended to buy Titans Return Nightbeat. But, when I saw him in a lot with Clobber and Apeface for a the right price, I figured why not. Since then, his dull scream expression has made for a few entertaining pictures, and I don't see anything wrong with owning something because it makes you smile. Dying for something to keep me busy, I decided to finally be rid of his painfully blue treads. Behold! I will say that I generally feel more comfortable referring to this guy as Muzzle, Nightbeat's Headmaster, since the individual robot looks so different from Nightbeat's. Dreadnaught (again, sort of) I made a decent match for the teal on his individual robot mode helmet, so I fashioned him a much more show accurate deco. Really pleased with how it plays off of the light blue.
Prime Masters! I completely skipped on these guys initially. I didn't grow up with Pretenders, they seemed very limited by their size, and having the first toys of all original 13 Primes be less than two inches tall just felt patronizing. But over time my opinion of them softened, I started to see their bright sides, and they started to win me over...unrelated, I found them in one big cheap lot on eBay after a good paycheque. As I said earlier, These are toys of the dynasty of Primes, just clad in decoy Pretender armor. The inner robots don't look like they did in the eighties because they aren't the same robots. But, softened as my opinion is on them, I still don't care for the whole Prime thing and would thusly much prefer them to be more visually interesting and less gang-moldy. So, here we are resurrecting the old touch-up thread. Metalhawk (Vector Prime) The Pretender shell is completely untouched, but it's what inside that counts here. Best I've done with yellow yet. Yes the blue and grey are backwards on the legs, and no I don't plan to change that. Landmine (Alpha Trion) This pretender shell was my least favourite of the bunch. The humanoid Autobots aren't nearly as cool as the monstrous Decepticons, plus he's the shortest on paint, has the least unique molding, and I can't help see him as a Robo-Ronald McDonald. That said, the red on his arms helps loads. I opted out of going full red on the hands just because I liked the look of this better. Ready to rumble as the Cyrax to Cloudburst's Sektor. Bomb-burst (Megatronus Prime/The Fallen) The only Pretender I actually like! Gun-metal on the shell, blue and silver for the weapon mode, and actual colour on the inner robot. I plan to paint all the Prime Masters to varying degrees once I get more paint. At that point, I may redo certain elements on these guys too, particularly more mauve on Bomb-burst. Also, though I've seen other mad geniuses on this forum craft Waveriders, Buglys, and others from this lot, I definitely won't be joining them. This already feels like a borderline case lipstick on a pig.
