I'm trying to improve my photographic abilities with regards to my collection, and I was wondering if anyone has any major advise.

What's the best sort of setup for toy photography? What kind of equipment is needed?

You can build a lightbox on the cheap, or pick one up on eBay for pretty cheap as well. A DSLR obviously helps along with a neat lens. It helps if any of your equipment has macro settings.

Check out the Supah-Clear TF pics thread in the TF Toy section. There's some good links in the first post and we talk about set up, cameras, settings, and all that jazz all the time.
