Does this mean that they are making a whole line of IDW inspired figures?

This looks so good that I don't care if it doesn't transform. A kickass Drift action figure of this caliber definitely can have a place in my collection.

It's a transformer that doesn't transform..... It's like an oven that doesn't cook or a fridge that doesn't cool.... I would take a non-transforming G1 style Megatron though please :p

This figure is gorgeous, I can't wait to see the final colored one. May have to get this guy eventually. :D

The inclusion of a poncho / hood / cloak makes this even more awesome.

Transforming doesn't matter as much to me anymore. Looking forward to more of these.

In this thread: people who don't understand how Third Party licenses work.

Unless a figure is made by Takara/Hasbro, it will never be able to transform (barring gimmicky things like the Sen-Ti-Nel Convoy pen) because they'll have non-compete clauses written into their contracts.

I am sorry, but little more explanation is needed... what is BLuefin and who or what is Flame? And is this official? Because I think third party stuff is not allowed on Toyfair, right?

Bluefin is a distributor like Diamond.
Flame Toys is a toy company. Designers on that team have worked on Bandai's Metal Build and Sentinel's Riobot and Re Edit Ironman line.
Third Party in it of itself is not illegal. This company has been given an official license. The major tip off is the Autobot symbols on the shoulders.

That's "colloquial" third party. In a fully legal, above-the-board sense, Third Party strictly refers to licensed products.

I also said that in the quoted post, specifically "Third Party licenses". All those figures that the fandom likes to fawn over don't fall into that category.

I dunno, I think the upcoming MP Megatron fits the bill quite nicely (and it transforms).

Of cource, not all SoC represent transforming robots. When they do, they usually transform or combine.

"Transform" is an action. To change from one shape or "Form" into something else. They will never be "TRANSFORMERS" By copyright.
But you bet your ass they can Transform. "Transform" isn't a word you need a license to use. It's terminology isn't held off by copyright as no one OWNS it. The clause of ANYTHING created can include the word "Transform". Even complete Knockoff companies. Even custom toy makers. Anyone has the right to use that word.

I'm a bit lost. The problem isn't the use of the word "transform", but the fact that Hasbro and Takara license their IP to other companies on the condition they don't make transforming toys so they don't compete directly with them (actually I'm not 100% there aren't licensed transforing toys, but all I have seen aren't). Companies like Maketoys, Warbotron, Fantoys make robot that transform but haven't an official license, so they can't use name, logos and the exact likeness of characters. That's why Sentinel giant robot is called Scorponok and doesn't become a giant scorpion while the Maketoys one that does is called Pandinus.
