Yeah, right now my collection is at $14k but I'd like to half that to put some $$$ down for a house. The hard part is deciding what to get rid off!!!

I'm sure that I've spent thousands to attain all the TFs that I have, considering that when I make my TF purchases I spend typically between $50-$200 -- from retailers both in the real world and online.

I don't wanna think about how much I've spent over the years...it's over a grand, I'm sure. I doubt that I would get that much on E(vil)-bay, though.

Hm I would have to take a look at home. But I could imagine that it might be now in the 4 digit area, or at least high 3 digits.

I’ve spent around 3000 for what is around 4500 worth of retail

G1 I have a policy of buying bulk lots and splitting it down to sell the bits I don’t want, or have duplicates of. I keep this up till I break even and the extra figures are mine!

I have been bitten a couple of times so I’ve probably realistically spent 250.00 on my g1s but that includes a grand max and an almost complete micromaster collection....

No complex speadsheet here. I've spent twice as much as what my partner thinks I've spent.

Meeeeh......I've mentioned this before when other threads like this pop up...

ANYTHING calculated in aggregate is going to be an OMG number. Doesn't matter what "it" is.

Try calculating how much you've spent at Starbucks in the last 5 years. That number will astound you.

Same with "drinks out at a bar" for the last 10 years. Or lunch during lunch break. Or Transformers.

Once you start compiling and compounding that number, it'll always make your jaw drop.

quick estimate for me is around this. 3rd Party and Masterpiece explosion was/is really expensive; i cut myself off at 85-86 MP's for space and price. now that i have kids and a house i've gotta try hard to cut back; plus i'm hitting figure/character redundancy. and getting one or two nice G1 figures a year to work towards a complete set in some condition if i don't buy a bulk lot or two for a good deal.

i'm kind of shocked that the OP did $37k in 2009.

I assign value based on how much enjoyment and how many smiles I get from my collection. After being a fan and buying figures since 1984, like many of us, at this point do we really want to know how much $$ we've spent? Once upon a time, I kept a spreadsheet that had the condition, accessories, and how much I paid. I stopped maintaining it around the Beast Wars era. It was several thousand back then. It's only grown exponentially since then.

It's supposed to be fun. Of course any amount you come up with will be an "OMG" number, but it's really meant as a thought exercise and it might even remind you of some old toys you put away. I totally forgot I had most of the original RID line. Besides, even posting $26 will still be an "OMG" number especially if you have a large collection.

But back on topic here, I'm definitely in the couple grand area. Spread out over like 22 years of course. Though people normally tend not to consider value unless they are planning on selling their collection, or if they find it to be a fun hobby. Honestly, my parents bought me the G2 stuff I own so I have no clue what they spent on them anyways. It'd all be just a guess.

I think it is really, really worthwhile for younger, adult collectors to see these numbers. It might only be a few figures here and there over the course of a month, but it adds up over decades...and there comes a point where you have to wonder what else you could have done with that money (like a down payment on a house, a wedding ring, retirement investments, etc.).
