I'm slowly eBaying large collection of TFs (starting largely from 2001 RID), to build a cash reserve for a small-in-number-yet-top-quality collection that even non-TF-fans would appreciate.

If money was no object, what would your 10-figure collection look like? I'm also thinking about having each character represented once (unless there's a good reason not to).

I'm thinking about making it largely Masterpiece-style figures of G1-era characters (like MP-10 and Mightron). But all figures from all eras are allowed. I'm not planning on collecting any Beast-era figures, but I'm interested to hear reasons to include any.

Also, a combiner (like Devastator) can be one of the ten figures.

 

Well, i got one of my holy trails with the Masterpiece Soundwave rerelease. Couldn't preorder that fast enough.

Devastator. Has to have the PE kits.

Weijiang MPP-10. Yes, it's a knockoff, but it's a damn good looking one at that.

I'd love to get my hands on the Botcon Rainmakers. I'd actually love to get all the Seekers in that mold.

I'd keep my CW Megatron, but I'd get the add-on kit.

Hmm...It's a tough decision.

Any MP10 variant. I've got the voyager MP-10V from KBB, but the Weijiang oversize MPP10 is also really good. Or, get the official MP-10 (BBTS has them in stock).

Apollyon, Hegemon, or one of the upcoming 3rd part Megatrons

MP Soundwave. I have the Year of the Goat version now, but the G1 colored one is being reissued. I preordered 2 of them (1 for me, one for my son).

MP Grimlock, because HE KING!

And, this one is personal for me, but Fort Max.

 

I've actually considered doing this myself, although just for my MP shelves.

Definitely agree with the majority, any version of the MP10 mold is a given for Optimus.

As for others either that I own or would like to own:

-Masterpiece Soundwave and minions
-DX9 Tyrant or the upcoming Fans Toys version of Galvatron
-For Starscream or any seeker MP03 or repaints or MP-11 versions depending on whether you prefer alt mode or robot mode accuracy respectively. With this choice I would recommend only having one, but the trio of SS, SW, and TC would be the most I would do.
- Any version of the MP12 mold
- MP 21 or MP21G for Bumblebee as for an ultimate collection, it would be a must to feature the first transformer ever shown on screen.
-DX9 Mightron or Maketoys Despertron (sp?) for Megatron
-MP08 Grimlock or any of the Fans Toys Dinobots
- ToyWorld Devastator or CW/UW Devastator with PE upgrades
***Wildcard choice Masterpiece Star Saber to represent the Japanese G1 continuity

This was an interesting thread until you said you wanted to focus on MPs. Boo. There are great toys out there besides mp, (and I think mp is overrated.)

So my vote for one of the greatest single transformer toys of all time?

The Takara Ginrai plus godbomber set/hasbro powermaster optimus prime with apex armor set. I consider this character to be Optimus Prime, and for my money is the single greatest Optimus Prime ever made. So many modes, so much fun. A definite for any collection, especially for a true "Best TF toys ever made" type collection.

 

I just said I was *thinking* about MPs. Doesn't have to be them. So, your God Ginrai suggestion is totally in-bounds.

I used to have PMOP back in the day, so I can understand your thinking. While he's very nostalgic, are you sure non-TF-old-timers like you and I would find it more appealing than MP-10?

Of course not. G1 toys lack the articulation to be called "action figures," much less compare with what 21st century Transformers have to offer.

Now, if I may be allowed to nitpick:

Lovely toy, but not even remotely a Transformer.  

You got two representations of Prime there... and your top 10 includes Masterpiece Wheeljack twice!  

 

1. G1 Optimus Prime

Kind of the toy that started it all. The central character in the mythos. The most classic and recognizable figure in G1, and also one of the most playable figures of that era.

2. United Megatron

A Megatron must be represented, and there haven't been many good ones. Gun mode preferred, United version has the best deco.

3. Masterpiece Soundwave

A pinnacle of modern design for a character who can't be left out. G1 Soundwave would also be an acceptable alternative.

4. Masterpiece Bumblebee

The number-two Autobot. The most accurate version ever.

5. Classics Starscream

Another character who has to be in there but who has few really good toy representations. The Classics toy was a modern classic, easily transformable, posable, something you pick up and fiddle with constantly. As the most redecoed and popular Transformers toy, its inclusion is required.

6. Masterpiece Rodimus Prime

Essential G1 character. Perhaps not the greatest toy, but with it you get both Rodimus and Hot Rod, as opposed to MP-28.

7. Unite Warriors Devastator

Representing the greatest Transformers gimmick, and the best version of a memorable character.

8. Masterforce Grand Maximus

Representing the best of the latter-G1 era. Accessories galore. Jaw-dropping display piece.

9. Masterpiece Sideswipe

Here more for the iconic car mode than anything else. Display in car mode for best effect.

10. Masterpiece Optimus Prime (MP-1)

Bringing it full circle. An alternative to MP-10. MP-4 is also acceptable if you really need the trailer in there, though G1 Prime covers that base.

This is a tough and personal question. I'd have to think for a bit about what figures to include. A few other thoughts though. Naturally, a group of highly recognizable characters in a similar style would meet your requirement of pleasing to non-TF fans and fit your MP-lean.

Thinking outside of that idea though, I think there can be nice contrast between old and new. Like having G1 Prime next to MP-10. Or, though I'm no movieverse fan, showing off the oversized evasion figure. I also don't collect mainline stuff anymore, but if you asked me to pick examples of *good* transformers, there are tons to mine where the robot mode and alt mode are stunningly different with satisfyingly intuitive transformations. Beasts could be in there to show eras as well. The new MP ones look deserving. Basically, with that few characters, you need a coherent theme - g1 cast, representing different eras, showing the gamut of TF design, etc

transmetal 2 beast wars megatron, r.i.d galvatron, Mp grimlock, titian class metroplex , primus, platnium unicron, g1 omega surpream (such a fun toy) recon ironhide (nest line) buster optimusprime ROTF, Mp soundwave.

if you pick up any of these 10 you will not regreat it at all, im lucky i have all of my hollygrails
