Okay, time for one of the newer molds. Topspin, Perceptor and Kup are the 3 new deluxe molds in the wave, and you guys may know all 3 of them from IDW's Last Stand Of The Wreckers. This is his first official update ever since his original toy's release. He's surprisingly good, but there are a few things that slightly irk me. Topspin has a good range of articulation, having ball joints, swivels in the upper arms and double jointed elbows, and he also has waist articulation, swivel joins in the upper legs, and of course his knees. While his chest design is very good, and emulates his old design, the body feels a little too big for me. The guns can clip on together, and as seen in the picture of the back shot, there is a 3rd peg created by combining the 2 guns that Topspin can hold. Upper shot of Topspin. You can see that he has a very good headsculpt, and you can see a good amount of detail on his chest. This is Topspin's Titanmaster, Freezeout. It seems to be a new mold entirely. Okay, now this is the other thing that annoys me. Unlike most of the Titanmasters, Freezeout's head seems to be less bulky than others, which makes it a little hard for me to insert the head into the body. I have to wedge it in carefully for fear that I might break it. Take care when handling him. Topspin's transformation shares similarities with Triggerhappy, except instead of a joint on the back rotating his nosecone and legs, the joint is now the chest, while the cockpit and nosecone simply fold out of his back. His legs collapse on themselves for transformation, but unlike other figures (such as the Combiner Wars jets), the legs do not close fully. Don't worry, the legs clip on each other. This is Topspin's vehicle mode, and it looks to be a very nice update of the Jumpstarter figure. I really like the design, although the back portions seem lacking. For a height comparison, here's Topspin with Astrotrain and Roadburn (Chase). Overall, the figure is pretty good, and serves as a worthy update for the Wrecker, but the chest still feels a little too big IMO, and attaching the head scares me a little. From looking at the figure a few times, I can see Twin Twist and Misfire being made out of him. Pick him up if you want to, but be careful with the head.
Crap, and here I really wasn't planning on getting this one. That alt mode sold me. That and the fact the G1 figures were actual favorites of mine back in the day.
Thanks for the review...can't wait to get him in hand myself...hope that Hasbro has plans for his brother...
Agreed. The massive thrusters on the back are what really sell it for me. The vehicle mode looks fantastic
I was interested in Topspin before, not severely, just interested as one of those figures that hasn't been touched in decades. Now after seeing those pictures, I can't get the idea that he transforms into a Demon from Wing Commander: Privateer out of my head; that ship was one of my favorites, so I now have to have him. A solid transformation and what looks to be a good figure only add more fuel to the fire.
And people say Hasbro is running out of G1 characters to update ... I'm torn. I have Apex and and pleased with him as my Topspin (I really wanted Geminus/Twin Twist from that set). But this is a solid-looking figure and I might get him just to support Hasbro doing "lesser-known" characters.
Thanks for the review ! I think his torso might look a bit chubby because of the blue 'waist band', like he's wearing one of those inflatable donuts for kids to swim.
Looks a lot like that Skids mold. Not a fan of that guy but something about him looks cool. I'll probably be more tempted by his remold.
I like the way his back looks. A lot of Transformers don't have all that much attention paid to the turnaround but this guy has it.
Obvious Misfire pretool is obvious, yet still awesome and worth buying multiple times. Damnit, first I was debating between Apex and Geminus or CW Rook with Steamshield's Jumpstarter kits, ("dude no more CW repaints-" shut up Rook was probably in everyone's top 5 CW mold lists) but now this guy? They knocked the ball out of the park so hard with this one, despite it being an obvious pretool. GAH! I'LL JUST HAVE THEM ALL!! Ah, plastic crack. Skids? Really? As in the blue theoretician dude with all the guns in his body and repressed memories? The guy who isn't even in TR and came out four years ago? Do you own the mold yourself? Because I see zero resemblance between the two. Or do you mean someone else...?
Torso looks kinda gappy from behind, but the rest looks like a winner. I really like how they managed to turn the 'robot bent in half' G1 mode into something resembling an actual vehicle.
Yeah, he looks cool, but as you say, a little gappy. How well do the vehicle 'prongs' stay tabbed in each mode? Great reviews by the way, much appreciated!
This looks like a star saber ( well saber that is ) Pretool to me Other than that , this looks very nice
I had hoped to hold off until Misfire was available but with Triggerhappy on it's way to me this week & Topspin looking like it could be a "necessary" part of my future collection I need to know one thing. Does Topspin do a decent "gerwalk" mode?
