A new Thread! This thread will be for me documenting my progress on designing 3d printable transformers.
This post is also a placeholder for me to change thumbnails and whatnot.

    3D design Simple 80s Camaro | Tinkercad

Here is an 80s Camaro Model I made for shelling a transformer with. The body was actually modeled off of a late 70s 2nd Gen Camaro but I suddenly was compelled to put an IROC style bumper on it so there you go. Maybe I will make it into Windbreaker or Windcharger. If anyone wants to print it, the tinker card link is above, and it is about 8x3x2cm.

Other notes: Tinkercad’s balljoint features are giving me some trouble so does anyone have any advice on articulation or ball joints? I think I’m going to stick to some variation of the car model above for my first transformer though.

    That's pretty slick looking.

I just want to point out, when I saw the placeholder image, I thought this was KITT from Knight Rider. :lol

Here is a quick teaser of robot mode. More like “I cut up the car and moved the parts around” mode. BA57E4F5-8BB0-4DFA-9F5E-7177536858FC.jpeg
The sides of the car will also slide out on an armature for the arms for sure. (<— Say that last part 3 times fast)
Not sure what kind of articulation I will add yet. If I do ball joints, it’s my understanding that I will have to make this a lot larger. The front of the car might not actually be oriented like that because I might make it into the shoulders.

Now time for some actual info!

I have the whole transformation worked out now and the legs are pretty much done. Ball joint hip, pinned knee. The waist also is planned to swivel and (maybe) have ab crunch! The car shell is all cut apart now save for some alterations need for the hood. The arms haven’t been started on yet but the face has and I might end up redoing it (the helmet at least)

Here is today’s update. I’ve been working on this for very short periods of time over the past couple of days and have gotten enough progress to add a new post.

Here is an assembly showing the articulation. I added ab crunch! (And waist swivel) maybe just a "waist" of time, ha haha

More importantly I now have some test prints of the leg thanks to @Botnanza
    image~2.jpg image (1)~2.jpg

Now I just need to make the arms and chest!
(And fix some tolerances, AAAnd fix the helmet AAAAAnd add unnessessary vents because it's a camaro and a robot :lol )

    Thought I’d give y’all a quick update.
    7DED6B27-937D-4FE7-84C1-5499092CF7BD.jpeg
This is a print ready lower half of the robot. Spinning(ish) tires, ab crunch, improved hip balljoint, waist swivel, knee hinge.
    48650FA9-22DE-4574-B18D-B48EE027674B.jpeg
Improved face. Remember this is tinkercad. I think I’ll just start over on the helmet.

I have the arms roughly mocked up, I just need to figure out the best way to do the transformation joint on the shoulder. (And add detail) The issue I’ve run into on the arms is the fact that they are supposed to fit between the doors and the chest in car mode, but then they’d be too thin. I’m now considering making them fold up above the head but that will require a lot more joints.

Also the “mould” is designed to be Carzap/ Windbreaker. I think I could easily “retool” it into some other characters, which I will reveal later...

Post from my another one of my threads kinda as a teaser for possibly my next project. Havent really had any time to work on Carzap since the last post other than doing some thinking on how to rework the arms.

3D design Some Optimus Prime Helmets | Tinkercad
I made the helmet from the sketch in the above post. No socket because I haven’t decided on a scale yet. Feel free to print or use it in your own projects.

The one on the left is evergreen colors. Middle is nova prime. Right is for my project. There are 3 other color schemes including: Nemisis Prime and Sentinel Prime.

Might make one with a 5mm peg on it so Megatron can hold it :lol

This is really turning out neat so far. I don't have the capability to print anything personally, but this certainly is inspiring me to possibly get one in the future. The detail on this is outstanding. Nice work so far!

    Thanks
I’m taking a break from the Camaro bot to work on Optimus Prime now. Mainly because I still have to figure out how to make the arms on Carzap work right and my Optimus design will let me test that easier

    ...or not.
Carzap is now almost done. How’d that happen? Today I designed new arms, a chest plate, shoulders, other stuff, fixed stuff. Now it just needs a neck and an armature to move the hood back.

    Mini bots are fun.

    B588976D-46B5-49B7-B944-2B2E4A54BBFB.jpeg B75BA201-4A4C-4D22-A107-97A010FF2D70.jpeg

Still needs a bit of work. Front and back of the Firebird need to taper in and still need some details. Car mode is ≈ 1”x2”. I was able to add a surprising (to me :lol ) amount of articulation using friction based hinges and 2mm pins/ pegs. I was considering freeing up the hands from those car chunks but I think it’s fine. I think Tinkercad seems really basic at first but it allows for a very quick design process and the sculpting ability isn’t too bad (for making boxy G1 style at least).

I’ve basically finalized the design. I might add a new head sculpt variation and some accessories. I’ve decided to oversize it from 2cmx4cm to be 3cmx6cm in car mode. That will also allow 3mm weapon compatibility! Right now I’m trying to figure out the best way to release it. Sculpteo, or materialize (unless Shapeways is better) or maybe cults3d as files. I also am working on making a label sheet with badges and g1 style details. Also the kit is modular so I can quickly swap parts like limbs and vehicle shells (hopefully speeding up the design process!)
