    Update: Complete!

So I started with a Captain America headmaster with an ok amount of sculpting and apparently got a tad ambitious for a second project...

I've decided to try and make a Thundertank from thundercats as a transformer! I have a knock off bruticus left over and was looking for stuff I could do with the remaining bots and this kind of worked.

WIP with lots and styrene board and green stuff. Picture heavy obviously.

Here's roughly what I'm aiming for, although second custom so taking a lot of artistic licence.

    upload_2021-6-10_20-52-34.png

This is what I'm starting with.

For starters it's a combiner so that's not happening. Disassembled him and ripped out the combiner peg. Then made him a chest plate with the look of the cockpit. Fangs, visor, nose. Aiming for cat like body. Filled the back chest cavity so it's not just a gap.

Next, I made the hands/tank arms. They aren't very impressive, or good even. Very static but I think the size at least suits the figure. He's a tank so should be bulky. Hands inside the outer hand basically. Changing up how the transformation works here though. Instead of tucking back in airplane mode the arms lean back but protrude forward to form the tank arms.

Trying to build a cockpit of styrene and green stuff too. Making sure it fits at least 1 titan master but aiming for 2 to match the tanks original design.

Started work on a titan master for the guy too. Fit a titan master peg slot into the neck and made the panthro faceplate.

Long way to go and a pretty steep learning curve. Second time I've used green stuff and I'm having to change how the transformation works with a lot of bulking up. Basically picked this bot because of the hinged back of the plane cockpit. Saw that and instantly thought of one of the dream projects of my youth. So decided to try and make it! I know it will be pretty choppy but a massive chunk of the fun is in the doing/learning anyway. If nothing else, I'm enjoying the challenge.

This needs to happen in real life. 2 of my favorite franchises and such an iconic vehicle. when i first saw what you were using as a base i was like "what?". but i think you got something going here and i really hope you pull this off cuz i really want to see this happen.

instead of greenstuff, they make a glue specifically for styrene that literally melts the pieces to fuse them together.

Hardhead would have been an excellent base! I had started using what I had lying about. I bought knock off bruticus especially for the captain America custom and just had those bots left. But given how much styrene and green stuff I've used probably would have been cheaper to just buy the new transformer! Oh well, half the fun is in the learning and experimenting.

Thanks for the tip about the glue. I'll be ordering that sharpish!

Got a bit more done last night and it's coming together. Detailing is going to take a while though.

Bulked out the legs, started making the treads. Finished the sculpt of the titan master. Skinned the cockpit too and made the attachment end too.

Assembled the basic transformer too to get the basic shape and transformation tested out. Pretty happy to be honest! For a second go at transformers I think it's looking close enough. Choppy but that's half its charm!

Need to add shoulders to bulk him up. They look too small in bot mode and too thin in alt mode. Gonna try and make move shoulders but we'll see.

that vehicle mode is pretty cool. Bot mode is looking a little rough. but its a WIP! i like the choice of panthro head since he built it.

Yeah. Bot mode needs loads doing to it to make it serviceable.

Enlarged shoulders will really help with balancing to silhouette out I think. Will also give the cock pit better proportions too.

The insides of the leg are just bulk at the moment and to hold the back together. That hold bubbled mess is going to have a vent similar to the leg grating running from the top of the leg to the bottom. You won't be able to see them that we'll where they are placed but the blobs of green stuff really stand out at the moment.

The arms need so much work. Gonna fill the gaps up with a little more green stuff to be evened out and then apply detailing to match the internals of the treads on the inside of the arm recess. That way it will look like it has some function and join the theme to the legs.

The treads are actually finished yet but they should look ok when I get the little details into the inside trim.

It had to be panthro to start with. I'm probably going to make a liono headmaster too so you have a choice and both of them should fit in the cockpit.

Ambitious, I know, but o really want to build a snarf battle master that somehow turns into a sword of omens. That's gonna be hard though. Got a couple of ideas but don't see how I can possibly do that without building the whole thing from scratch and not sure what the hell to so with snarfs head.

Finished up the final structural changes. Added shoulder pads that slide to hide the upper arm in alt mode and also give it more bulk in bot mode to balance out the silhouette.

Would like more motion ideally in the shoulders but first go at building a joint so I'm happy still. Probably the first thing I'll rebuild if I ever manage to buy a 3d printer.

Next up, detailing and tidy up!

Put some detail into the arms, bulked out what needed padding and started painting!

Looks really cool in silver! Up close you can see plenty of imperfections but from a distance it looks pretty cool. At least it does in bits. Not assembled him yet. Need to finish painting some bits first.

Silver and black colour scheme for bot mode with some red highlights somewhere to tie into the thundercat logo that will go on the back. Thinking the tiny vents on the shin in red.

Completed him today! Fully transforms! Thundertank plus panthro headmaster. Really happy with how it turned out. Not perfect but first time I've tried something this scale.

Started some work to round the guy out into a full play set. Got the mechanics roughly figured out for the Snarf of Omens!

Added liono headmaster and the Snarf of Omens to finish out my Thundertank playset! There's some bits that aren't great that I would do again if I tried again. Maybe when I get a 3d printer! But given it's a second attempt with transformers I'm really happy with how it turned out.

PS: can I change the thread title?

For a second project, this is audacious and well-done.

Can't wait to see where you go from here.
