When Shockwave came out, I thought that mold would make a great GLaDos from Portal. So I present GLaDos's Mobile Utility Chassis (best name I could come up with and yeah I'm disappointed with it too). Man, this was such a pain in the ass. I restarted this project because I was having such a hard time painting her. Even this time was extremely difficult. Nothing ever looked right and I couldn't get the underlying purple to be hidden easily. I also tried damn hard to sand every point of friction that would occur and trimmed tabs so paint chipping wouldn't happen... As you can see, I failed that completely. In the end, I present this not so much because I am proud of it. I present it merely because I'm sick of trying to fix it. Honestly I don't even want to put her into vehicle mode. She would chip like crazy I'm betting and I wouldn't get her to tab in securely. So this is just the latest in the trend of figures I've customized and been dissatisfied with. And since the boards currently have the auto image resizing disabled, I won't imbed any pictures in this post. I'll let you click them to see the crappy job I did with this.
This is cool. Although I might paint her eye the red (or orange) she has in the game. Also, ingenious work using Shockwave's cannon as a portal gun!
I love you <3 Before I even opened the thread, I sang to myself "I'm making a note here: Huge success."
I'm glad you guys like her. I think the concept works pretty well and Shockwaves gun pulls off a portal gun quite well, almost better than I anticipated. Her eye was yellow in game.
Hehe, nice idea. Light paint over dark, always going to be tricky! I guess to do it you'd have to get into disassembing it and sanding it all down a bit first or something... tho i suppose if it's moulded in purple, that won't help.. Portal. Proper game. *goes off to play Portal 2 again*
The thing is, I did have it in as many pieces as I could and sanded down ball joints and physically cut some off all tabs. I'm thinking I should have primed it first. But man, the figure itself fought me, my paint fought me, this was just an exercise in frustration and it probably shows, hehe. Even the stickers gave me issue; mostly trying to decide what to put where. I fully endorse if anyone wants to take this idea and one up me.
What kind of paint did you use? Did you try undercoating it in grey first? (Is that the same as priming?)
HA! At long last, someone made an actual custom from this idea! Though it needs more black detailing. If you look at GLaDOS, she's actually mostly back with white panels.
you should make the detail on the chest yellow. kin of like energon going through his body but make it yellow and it totally needs more black
I honestly think you're being a bit too hard on yourself with this custom. Sure, the paint's on just a bit thick, but it's really not that bad. Admittedly, white can be a difficult color to work with. In think you already identified one of your problems (no primer coat). But, yeah, it seems like you're definitely at the stage where it's just gonna be healthier for you to call it "finished" and move on. It still seems to me that you accomplished what you set out to do for the most part. You learned some things on the way. That sounds pretty successful to me.
hmm, I might try to do something like this at some point... great concept, good portal gun, but, problematic, so, maybe you can try again with more primer and detailing and very thin coats of paint? If you want GlaDoS, why not try using a different head?
I thought the head was what made it work honestly. The mono-eye is a defining feature for her. I did consider removing the ears though.
