On topic, Glad they got the madman. Good that the hostages are safe and that he didn't detonate.

BTW, I was watching Discovery channel Online, ironically

Looks like the cops did a great job of cleaning our environment of this idiot.

And of course Fox News is on the case when it come to linking this incident to one of their top 10 most wanted....yeesh.

Kudos to the cops for their efforts, and to the Discovery Channel for having a plan in place for notifying their employees of the situation. That potentially saved some people from harm.

I'm with you on this one DK...the programming on Discovery Channel has taken IMHO a very sad downward turn..I used to be glued to that channel but hardly ever watch anything on there anymore. :(
Very pro-active and forward thinking.. glad everyone ELSE is ok :thumb

Don't blame Discovery Channel, blame our society and/or the Television Economic system. They need more people to watch their channels. More viewer = more money. So the dumbed it down.

    and of course, the squirrels.

Unfortunately what we have here was a very misguided individual. Many of his concerns are very valid and important issues, but through his actions he has done nothing to advance them, and he has only hurt the causes he was so passionate about.

Maintaining a stable population and slowing growth seems to be a bit of an elephant in the room that few people want to address. It doesn't get anywhere near the media attention, and yet in many ways it would reduce so many of the other problems we fixate on, like poverty, famine, drought, conflict, war, deforestation, and global warming. People assume it would entail draconian measures such as forced sterilisations and abortions, one-child policies etc, but there are many other options available that would be far more palatable and easily implemented. Increasing female literacy and access to education is one example that has been demonstrated to reduce birthrates.

I found the nutjob's list of demands here:
    My Demands

My reaction to this craziness is exactly the same as PZ Myer's opinion, to quote him: Just the fact that he thinks the channel of "American Loggers," "Deadliest Catch," "Dirty Jobs," "Ghost Lab," "Swamp Loggers," "Pitchmen" and "Shark Week" will be his allies in his crusade to end the blight of humanity suggests there is something wrong in his head.

Am I the only one seeing the connection here with Diane Ladd's character in Roger Corman's Carnosaur? The crazy one who thinks that humans are worthless and the world belongs to the animals :lol  I amuse myself.

I didn't think anyone else had seen it.

But at least her plan wasn't as ******ed as holding Discovery channel hostage. I liked that movie.

I just read through his list of demands and it looks like it was written by a hysterical nutcase. The worst part is that they all basically say the same thing:

"Find solutions to lower human population."
"Find solutions to lower human population."
"Find solutions to lower human population."
"Find solutions to lower human population."
"Find solutions to lower human population."

Yeah, we get it. We get it! Try repeating that statement for all eternity in Hell.

What a sad, desperate person. He did however take the messages of the environmentalist and evolutionist to their logical conclusions though, so I hope that he becomes an example.

At least the hostages are safe, and no one got killed except for the crazy guy.

    Now here's my question:

Was the kill a headshot? :p

I'm glad people are safe, and that this guy was taken down before any harm was done to others.

There's being passionate, yet realistic about saving the environment... and then there's this - a desperate, fanatical plan that has only done harm to his cause, which also cost him his life.

He wasn't just mad about people like the Octo-Mom. He thinks all people are bad for the environment in general and that we need to limit reproduction so that one day we all go extinct. Or rather, this is what he thought...

Oh, I know. He was just really against that type of programming.

He kind of had a point though. Like Bumblethumper said, overpopulation is the elephant in the room. Not that I condone holding people hostage and being crazy though.

I think he was using a very different definition of "logic" than nearly everyone else.

From his manifesto, it seemed like he wanted to end reproduction all together, though yes, I imagine human extinction would be a relatively quick result from such an action. I think we can all agree that completely halting human reproduction is ludicrous and unfeasible, but the idea of better managing population growth is certainly possible without human extinction being the end result. Don't get me wrong though, this guy was a whackjob in several different ways.
