But to fill what gaps exactly? The gap of maybe someone like myself who wants to collect the movieverse who might say "Oh look. My movie collection lacks combiners. I'm gonna purchase the 3rd party combiners to fill them in!"?

Or is it the gap of purchasing a toy that we know Hasbro/Takara has no chance of making? Or is it a little of both? Or maybe I'm overthinking it? If someone could please explain :)

I buy what I want, it's not about gaps. If something has a unique transformation or aesthetic il be interested, maybe I'll buy it who knows.

There are admittedly a few characters I need just for their character, like a decent rodimus, that no one wants to make though. Seriously, where the fuck is a decent rodimus?

It may have started out that way but 3P's have exploded in popularity and it seems like most anything goes.

Both. Anything that either doesn't exist in the official line, like Apollyon, or something better than what exists in the official line, like Microblaze Onslaught.

They say He walks here and there in the form of an Old Man too. What do They know.

    Excellent advice.

3rd party toys exist because people will pay for it. People will pay more for higher quality figures which is often the case for 3rd party representations.

They don't fill gaps for me for any official figure I don't have, they mainly fill my display and collection just cuz I like them more

The don't fill gaps for me, they give me choices. I like to only have one of each character, so with 3P, I get choices.

They make a combination of what will sell and what they love. Most of 3P is G1 at this point because of those two points. I would imagine most other series would sell to some extent (varying degrees depending on which one you are talking about), but until there are 3P designers that love them there won't be as much. You specifically mentioned the movieverse, for now at least it is where 3P started with add-on kits and such. Maybe it will grow beyond that, but it will at least partially depend on how they sell, and partially on how ambitious those companies are.

Can you imagine what a set of Classic Dinobots would look like today without 3P? It would be made up repurposed movie, Energon and FOC molds in G1 colors! HORRORS!

And of course the Classic Devastator would still be this!

3p exist to make money. They originally did this by making accessories for existing figures, then as time and boldness increased, by making figures Hastak were unlikely to touch (Classics Catilla!)... Now, as the market expands, they have become even more bold, and it's now beating Takara to the line... So now there are 3p Sunstreaker, mirages, ironhides, etc... It's a game of anything goes.
