Alright, some preface here, I've been keeping track of all the CHUG figures I've been collecting using a similar list to this one and I thought it might be helpful to share with the rest of you here. Now, there are a few qualifications for this list, every item is a character that had a toy released during the original G1 run in America or Japan. (Excepting the 1990 Micromasters and Action Masters because, frankly, we're so far away from any reasonable updates to those figures that it didn't seem worth it at this time. So there are three possible options here. An "O" denotes that the character has one or more "satisfactory" updates. I'll admit off the bat that this is inherently a biased category, but I try to maintain the qualifications of the figure being an official CHUG figure (no homages from movie molds or the like ala Movie Breakaway as Getaway or HTFD Jetblade as a cone head or something), they should carry over their original gimmick or a similar enough gimmick if it was a factor in their fictional appearances (Combination being an important one, "sparkabot sparking" being a stupid, irrelevant one. Like the sparkabots in general, really), and general maintaining a scale that is roughly proportional to their G1 toy or original fictional appearances (Minibot characters being legends classes and larger characters such as Ultra Magnus being leader class, mostly everyone else can sort of fudge it.) A "P" denotes that there is a figure that matches one or more, but not all, of the above qualifications AND has at least a greater-than-snowballs-chance of getting another figure (We'll probably get another Huffer at some point, but the likelihood of seeing multiple Squawkboxes is probably very very low) This is for those of you that are willing to buy stop-gap figures that will probably be replaced and are okay with that. A blank "- " denotes that character has no figure that appropriately matches the characteristics noted above (Energon Roadblock would not be a suitable "P" level for Grapple, for example) Without further ado, here's the VERY LONG list (Formatting to come at a later date when I am not horribly lazy.) 1984 Autobots Autobot Mini-Cars Brawn - Considering the original intention of some Movie 07 characters (Namely Breakaway, Big Daddy, Fracture, Jolt, etc.) as being Universe 08 releases, I think it's fair to count those as updates. The fiction may have them as Movie toys, but they were intended to be released in a Classics-based line. You can thank retailer pressure for that not happening.
Either way, I don't think that any of them fit the other qualifications well enough to even qualify, or have since been replaced by better versions anyway. Breakaway was just the first that came to mind. Besides, if I were to count those, I'd probably start counting some of the looser homages too and that's a slippery slope I don't want to go down
Honestly? I can't help but appreciate how much they've done, especially in the last five years. We are literally just FRENZY away from having the retail 1984 lineup complete and there's so much progress being made with each year, digging deeper and deeper into the more obscure stuff.
Okay, I see where you're coming from but I didn't mean it in a disrespectful way. I was just pointing out there's still some blanks left that I hope get in filled in.
I disagree vehemently with this one. Should be: Getaway - The TR figure is in no way adequate. If you wanted to say "P", you could at least make an argument based on it being the right size class. But other than that, it's Getaway in name only. Completely unacceptable. You also forgot the Headmaster Juniors, which are different looking to the 1988 Autobot Headmasters. But otherwise, great list.
Shockwave could have an arguable P due to his fall of cybertron deluxe, he did wear that body in idw. or his cloud voyager Outback could also have a P due to botcon 2005 Fallback Runabout and Runamuck should have Os since they had the Legends class Blackjack repaints and the Funpub exclusives. Override also had a Legends Groove repaint in Adventure. so a P maybe? Ruckus and Windsweeper were part of the most recent TFCC figure sub service. and i'd say Botcon 2014 Scorponok at least qualifies Scorpy for a P
How is Warpath only "P" level? There was a new-sculpt Legends (the new "Legion" size) figure under the 2008 Universe line, a new-sculpt Deluxe figure under the 2010 Generations line and a new-head retool of Thrilling 30 Legends Megatron under the Combiner Wars line. Meanwhile, Chop Shop is "O" level even though the only new figures he's gotten were a tiny companion figure for Thrilling 30 Legends Megatron and a new-head retool of Thrilling 30 Legends Skrapnel under the Combiner Wars line. The Battlechargers both exist as FunPub new-head retools of 2010 Generations Deluxe Wheeljack, and as redecos of Combiner Wars Blackjack under the Adventure line. Considering Blackjack was initially designed as Runabout, that should count for something. Rumble and Frenzy both had Scout Class figures under the United line (later redecoed for Adventure). Eject and Rewing exist as FunPub new-head retools of those two. How is Black Shadow only a "P" level with the 2010 Generations Deluxe figure and the upcoming Titans Return Leader figure?
This is all kinds of cool and very similar to something I did a while back. Yet this is also all kinds of subjective depending on the person collecting and keeping track... Like how you have Huffer under P? I assume its because of the Combiner Wars Legends figure, well, some people like me would consider that enough to give Huffer an O. Or the fact that I would put Warpath under O because he has the Generations Deluxe and the Combiner Wars Legends.
Warpath's deluxe and original legends figure don't match the scale of the other minibot figures and the Megatron retool lacks his distinctive chest cannon. Plus he's on the rumor list for another figure. Chop Shop, meanwhile, never really looked that different from Shrapnel so I can totally understand the lack of retooling on that figure. And I'll admit that I totally forgot about the battlechargers or the FRRE figures Neither of Black Shadow's figures retain their pretender gimmick in any real form, so for me that doesn't match the qualifications for a proper update. Again, this is all subjective and it serves more as a jumping off point for your own individual list.
G1 cartoon scale is generally a little fudgy and warpath was a disproportionately small tank and sometimes an average sized robot, but yes, for ease of reference I put all minibot characters at the legends size. I think most of the general collecting fandom has kind of decided that that's the optimum scale for those characters. Again, you can't please everybody all at once. Just take it as a general reference guide.
Maybe we need a poll, because my belief is that most collectors don't want a minuscule tank next to much larger street cars, no matter what size the original toy was. I think for most of us with a CHUG collection, the priority is recreating the original cast of the cartoon/comics, not recreating the original toyline. Not all, by any means, but most. But thanks for clearing that up, because I think it was confusing a few.
I think you are writing off movie releases needlessly - movie breakaway is not a movie mold, its cyb. Hot shot. from the AEC. And Energon Insecticon is about as blatant a Barrage update as we will ever get.
Heres my list dinobots, predacons, terrorcons, horrorcons, scorp, tryptacon, trottlebots, missing minibots, punch/ counterpunch, missing headmasters and target masters. Im happy with all my classics toys so far
