Good article! But lol, the primary consumer is always gonna be children? My guess is it'll be more like 50/50 once kids are primary school age. Parents aren't gonna buy toys other than birthdays and holidays if a phone or tablet is already distracting a kid. The sales based off cartoons aren't even reliable because the cartoons are all behind some sorta pay wall and being watched randomly. Jesus, movie-going is struggling too, and partly because of the streamers. It's all technology and all-encompassing. We couldn't even collect the way we do without the net and this forum!

There's an awful lotta reasons toys adults didn't buy are now in B&M alongside the usual KO and Happy Meal-quality stuff. But primarily it's all too expensive.

That must be where it came from! OG Cybertronians --> Pretender technology --> Robot-shell fusions with vehicular alts --> Faunal-tinged 'bot-modes with zoological alts.

Not sure what's next: somewhere the Vegicons are plotting?

My £50 Legacy Metroplex from Comics & Cocktails arrives tomorrow, which means I spent an hour playing Collection Tetris to make space for him. I think I've succeeded... Unless I decide I want to display him in alt-mode.

For me, the biggest problem with the Micromasters was that - apart from Direct-Hit & Power Punch and Storm Cloud & Whisper - they were pretty rubbish. Cheap plastic, bad articulation, just not very good.

Bombshock & Growl being the absolute nadir - one just could not stand up, the other couldn’t transform as the plastic was so flimsy the legs actually couldn’t tab together.

Just compare Fire & Holi to Boater & Pīpō - the good ones feel like they’re from a completely different toy range…

Yup. Although the Battle Masters were a real step backwards in quality, and the gun modes are way too chunky. Universe/Henkei Nightstick should have been the baseline. They’d already got it right!

Absolutely. The only one I paid near £25 for was Wolfang K-9*, and that’s ’cause he apparently never came near mainland UK…

Yes, happy happy F-Day to all those who willingly or accidentally sired or adopted offspring!

I still think it’s a case of children now buying less toys than adults, rather than adults buying more toys than children.

In Transformers-terms, my guess is a relatively static amount of adults used to be 5% of a very big number, now they’re 50% of a very small number…

*I still want to call him ‘Wolfgang’, even though I now know better…

    Good old statista...

"Starbucks revenue for the twelve months ending March 31, 2024 was $36.530B, a 7.45% increase year-over-year"

"The revenue generated in the Action Figures market worldwide in 2024 amounts to US$8bn.
It is projected that the market will experience an annual growth rate of 1.79% (CAGR 2024-2028)."

    ChatGPT 4.0 believes

"Hasbro's crisis is multifaceted, involving economic conditions, supply chain disruptions, changing consumer preferences, intense competition, financial challenges, and evolving market dynamics. While these factors have created significant hurdles, strategic adjustments and a focus on innovation and sustainability may help Hasbro navigate through these challenges and regain stability."

"While Mattel and Hasbro face similar industry-wide challenges, the specifics of their crises and strategic responses differ. Hasbro's situation is more acute due to higher debt levels and significant financial investments that have not yet paid off as expected. Mattel, on the other hand, faces challenges but benefits from a stronger portfolio of proprietary brands and proactive digital integration. Both companies need to continue adapting to market changes, focusing on innovation, digital transformation, and sustainability to navigate through their respective crises."

@Skywarp SCS thanks for the link.
This struck me as odd, "A “societal perception” that all toys are made for children feeds into the embarrassment, he said."

When "societal" gets into the picture, I think the consumerist model of toy collecting clashes hard with the reality of what is "highly desirable" in society:

    - high level of education (knowledge about toys is seen as nerdy/geeky/earthrisy)
    - high income (so many complaints about the price of toys, and so many alternatives as income goes up)
    - high level of savings (toys burn money fast)
    - high level of investment (which does exist for specific types of figures, and it's unfortunately generational)
    and most importantly

    - high level of social capital / network (which can be built in the TFandom, but it's the exception)

And that's how society ends up filled with RP-speaking middle managers wasting $20 on a cocktail, just to socialise and be seen.

I don't think toy collecting has less dignity than Royal Aston, but it is a fact that investing in a few Royal Aston tickets does have higher societal value than LEGO Titanic.

There is so many nice 6" figures around lately it is very difficult for me to not go nuts on them.
I don't often have the same desire when it comes to Transformers Lately.. it is like your average company you've never heard of can make an outstanding release and Hasbro makes sub par stuff that as a consequence of that low quality bar lack that premium feel that would justify the price. I don't mind Diaclone despite it being daftly over price as aside from the occasional loose joint and that I have to assemble the damn accessories myself.. 'it feels' premium to me most of the time.

Though the Dianauts figure packs are still extortionate that is for sure.

So does the upcoming 'Leader' Soundwave mean the 'Flix Bee will also get reissued?

Maybe in an overpriced 2-pack with Core Class Spike/Daniel?

Ferret HQ 2.0 will be here on Tuesday! :)

Which gives me time to remove the last bit of clutter in my room and then it's just a matter of getting a few supplies in ( raw and dry food, paper towels, puppy pads and pet friendly disinfectant ) plus some new blankets to go in and around the cage and all will be good to go for the new arrivals! :)

I've discovered the Magic Square cassettes for Soundwave now go for considerably more than the original price so that'll raise some funds towards further Dr Wu releases....I seem to have missed the original 3 Seekers but the Coneheads are still about and I'd also get Cosmos with Ramjet.

Haven't had any signs of movement from Robo Toy Base on Dr Wu Optimus but still early doors so no need for any concern yet.

It was all kicking off at the nature reserve on the edge of town today as the swans and geese were massed around one of the bins near the lake in what was obviously a show of force after some jiggery pokery so I kept my distance :D

My next robots will probably be Studio Series WFC Optimus and Reactivate Soundwave courtesy of @MyTea Boc. I've watched EmGo's videos for the transformations and am looking forward to getting both!

Legacy Animated Prime and Prowl ordered... Now to see if Bulkhead and Ratchet have a version released for them...

And a fairly expensive purchase made on facebook. I just hope they survive the shipping!

    Faraway '84, distant '85.

    20240616_143857.jpg

Or, CHUG#2 Autobots, part one. Shapeshifting extraterrestrials from the days when only Decepticons combined!

Missing Percy because I forgot he was '85, Jetfire & Omega because they won't fit, and Swoop, Windcharger, Powerglide & Seaspray because NuScale versions either don't exist or aren't out yet. Roller is in his trailer, which is in its pocket dimension since Optimus is in robot-mode.

Roadbuster, Whirl, Topspin & Twin Twist are represented by older toys, since Hasbro haven't got round to making NuScale "Leader" toys of them or are still waiting on a suitable multi-pack to be a store exclusive in Outer Lemuria.

We do have modern Powerdashers though, which is really nice.
The originals got KO'd a fair bit as I recall, but not as much as the Jumpstarters did...

The Great Upgrade was just a blending of pretender and micromaster tech.

Since menasor is gone, rather than let them go to waste, Bruticus got a hand foot upgrade. Sure it aint accurate silver but meh. He looks good.
