This won't be a long review, mostly some pics. Because really, if you're here already, odds are you know what the hell G1 Starscream looks like and how he works.

    PACKAGING:

Box is brightly colored and features some nice artwork, yet the overall product winds up looking a little bland at the end of the day.

    JET MODE:

Again, it's a G1 seeker mold. You've all probably handled one or at least seen pics over the years. All of his plastic colors are brighter than past reissues or original G1. He also has the yellow jet canopy from the animation similar to the Takara TFC-09 Bookstyle reissue. Comparison pics with the recent Walmart G1 Reissue from a few years ago.

    ROBOT MODE:

Those bright colors carry over into robot mode, and he looks pretty great. Also of note, Hasbro has painted the robot face in a lighter grey and picked out the eyes in red. The Encore and recent Walmart reissue do paint the eyes gold, removing the need for that awful eye sticker that never worked, but red is more animation accurate.

    ACCESSORIES:

This TFTM Reissue does have the big, dumb safety missiles, so he will need a new set of G1 missiles if this bugs you as much as it bugs me. Also includes the G1 Megatron pistol to be used by Starscream. This G1 Megatron gun is different from past releases in that this new Retro version is a flat, grey plastic and the recent Walmart reissue/TFC-09 versions was painted silver.

    THE GOOD STUFF:

The whole reason I bought this figure was to slap him into the old G1-style box from the Walmart reissue.

Since there is no plastic tray, was the figure damaged inside at all?

Not that I noticed. Paint is great as you can see in the pics. Joints are tight as can be, everything works correctly out of the box.

I just want the box. that's all. The toy can go in the nearest dumpster.

The box is the thinnest cheapest Hasbro box I've ever held. You can feel the figure from the outside, it's that "soft."

I am beyond disappointed by this release.

I understand Hasbro is trying to go green and save on packaging, but this is a friggin collectors item that many of us want to display in box, or at least keep the box.

Would you be so kind to provide the location of said dumpster? I wasn’t planning on getting another G1 Starscream before seeing this review. I have the Takara D-22 reissue, but this one is looking great. Still hate the pontoon missiles, though. Love the painted face. Good move, Hasbro!

PS. Seriously, @GAUGE, I’ll take it off your hands

That's just an excuse they're using. They don't give a rats ass about the environment. They're cheapening the packaging and box to save a few pennies and keep more profits. Yet they don't pass the savings on to us.

How do you know that savings in packaging don’t compensate for the rise in materials, labor, and distribution costs?

Because they've jacked up prices higher and faster than the inflation rate. For instance, a deluxe was $20 2-3 years ago. Since last year, it was $25 which is a 25% increase. While inflation for overall goods only went up 6.5%. So they're profiting 18.5%. They just say "oh we need to increase prices cuz inflation lol."

Sorry to hijack this thread. I'm not going to discuss further. Good review OP.

I had no idea the older WM reissue came with the tiny Megatron gun.

Yea it is. If any of you get it, I would be very careful holding the box, it’s very prone to caving in under pressure, especially since there’s no plastic tray inside to reinforce it. You can literally damage the box by merely applying pressure with your thumb. Definitely wouldn’t stack anything over it if you find it at Walmart and put it into a cart or shopping basket.

does this release come with the standard "bombs"? because if it's really just the ridiculously oversized null-rays, I don't know why they don't just make some new, anime-accurate ones (or adjust the ones from ER Starscream) to go with this guy. The oversized null rays look just as terrible now as they did almost 20 years ago, if not worse.

Seeing this, how I wish they had remolded this figure to include collapsing thighs. It would be the perfect G1 mold if so. I have a hard time believing No customizer has ever attempted this. Maybe I will try if I find one of these.

Are you serious about this? I just bought this and you’re welcome to the box and insert. Just pay the shipping and it’s yours. It was going in the trash otherwise. Pm me if interested.

I have the original reissue and I wish they would have done this before, without the terrible new box. I'm happy the reissues are getting cartoon accurate decos without stickers. This at least makes the price a little more palatable. However, they are still horrendously overpriced, especially with the packaging.

Okay… who makes the replacement seeker missiles again? I don’t want to use those monster missiles on mine.
