We got Halloween and Fall/Thanksgiving stuff at my job. Xmas stuff will be here in less than a few weeks.
Also, as of today 60% OT scheduled for the Yolopark! Man I always get depressed when they cancel my TF OT funds. But if I can score that last bit...the Yolopark purchase will be paid! Just hope it ends up "worthing" it.
holy cheese...while this thread is still closed The Life Sucks thread I'll rant here...it's 95 degrees!!!! in my review room!!!! Blue collar life! (I guess I'm slightly below blue collar if I'm living like this )
As a follow up: now I'm running it for my 4 hours early and the day shift operator sandbagged a tool change to leave it for whomever followed. What a shit heel...
Just came back to work from a five day convention weekend that I had a blast during...to find that the department head I liked so much quit literally yesterday. So not only did I not get to say goodbye because I was on vacation with no knowledge of this, but he also was shouldering a hell of a lot of work. There's now only three people in my department, but the other two wear so many hats that I'm functionally the only guy doing any work. I don't even know how much the now ex-department head was doing and now I may be required to do those tasks. Combined with other signs the company is struggling, I really am uncertain of my future. I definitely will be updating my resume and getting some jobs lined up as backup but this is NOT what I was hoping to come back to after a long vacation. Suffice to say I haven't been this shaken up in a long, long time and when things will get stable again, if they get stable, being an unknown element isn't helping.
My company made us all sit through "diversity training" for 80 minutes today. They explained the concept of conscious and unconscious biases and how these can undermine our effectiveness. I'll sit through just about anything if they want to pay me to do it, but this was really pushing it. This is a company that has built itself by buying other companies and integrating them. So now we're a bunch of what used to be different companies in related fields all part of the same conglomerate. And so they spend ungodly sums of money on making us all feel like part of this massive whole, when we really couldn't care less. Their initiative is to make us the "best" company in our field by 2025. The gag is, they acknowledge we won't be the biggest. So what does being the "best" mean? It means whatever they decide it means so that come 2025 they can declare success and feel like they've accomplished something. Executives will come up with crazy inventive ways to waste money sometimes, I guess.
Bagged my first job working retail at a store I’m rlly passionate about last month going good so far but I’m hoping they’ll take me back over Xmas break once I go back to school in the fall
Oh they will take you back, trust me. Don't get stuck in it though, retail will suck the life out of you and you'll lose your will to live.
Speaking of work, it's day 5 of the heat wave here in Washington with no end until Monday. The dock I work on has no A/C and it's made me sick all week from the heat. Also, tomorrow will be the 5th Saturday I work in a row. Not even the managers do that. So needless to say I'm pissed. They also scheduled me in a department I don't work in and it's a closing shift. So needless to say I will be calling out tomorrow. They can go fuck themselves, I think working 4 Saturdays in a row is more than enough. Rant over.
Can confirm, I loved my first real job out of college being a backroom guy at Target, but it was only ever a temporary position until I could get something in my field of software development. The hours sucked and it was part time so no benefits.
I worked at electronics boutique back when there was a software etc., let that sink in Retail is a good experience, I had a handful including Disney, just know when you should leave. Sometimes fun and enjoyment needs a backseat to advancement...but take your time and enjoy it.
Yeah I’m not looking to do this for the rest of my life or anything, just trying to get some work experience in before I get out of college and (attempt to) get a job with my degree
Definitely a good way to look at it, though I would also strongly look into internships if possible since obviously more field-relevant positions will look better. That is the catch-22 of employment, though, as even with a degree trying to get a job can be an absolute pain in the ass without work experience...which obviously you can only get if you're employed.
Don't scare the kid. He'll probably have a good experience, leading to big & better things in life. Are you talking about the age before viagra? Nowadays software has made way for hard drive.
I forgot to add this to this thread...it's work related I work for a different albeit similar industry from last...my last industry had certain abuses thanks to bad management...I received litigation papers from a law firm regarding this a few years ago and thought nothing would come from it, I would recieve updates anually. A week ago, I received another letter...and a check for $5k. I put that money down towards that crazy Yolopark figure I guess too...as a part of this thread...I might have to move my wife and kids back to a real town/city. Weird positive for this is that if the wife and kids are relocated and I stay in this apt I can store my figures in the empty rooms. Good and strangely sad in an odd way.
work was super busy again...but I got a workout in before the end of the day...makes for a positive work day
