We've had broken Impactor kicking around for about a year now. My son snapped his leg off very easily. He's not rough on stuff so I called quality control. Hasbro was nice enough to send us a Sideswipe.... then I had to find another Impactor. Anyway I was going to make it into Twintwist. I had some G1 drills and everything. Then I thought maybe I could make Slammer, but then I'd totally need a Metroplex. Finally after watching Netflix Siege, the kiddo and I had the same idea of making a "rust zombie" (his words). So this broken transformer turned into a whole bunch of quality time with one of my kids. Silver linings. Hope you enjoy.
I had him put most of the paints and washes on the shoulder cannon. I just adjusted accordingly with a damp paper towel and then did highlights. Clear coat of semi gloss and we're done.
Awesome you and your son have something to bond with. My son hasn't really shown an interest in collecting, nor do I see it happening either, so a tad disappointing. But he did express an interest recently when I was putting together my Siege Coneheads in wanting to painting a guy. Not too sure I want him making a mess of my Testor's enamels yet (he's 7), but I just realized I have a spare Strike Gundam we could possibly build and paint together.
Looks great! The only thing I would suggest changing is to use flat clear coat (or flat and semi-gloss) since rust is a very flat finish.
We've got 4 kids and they're all a little different. They sometimes like the things my wife and/or I like to do. Other times its something new. Either way we're doing something together. My oldest was not as into dnd terrain as I but really liked playing. Also craft paints might be the way to go, just seal them with a clear. I've made peace with the fact that they're going to play with it and wear a bunch off. The leg is from a Walgreens Shockwave. We used his foot, upper thigh, transformation leg flaps and hip joint. Hip joint made the new knee. The thigh made the calf. The foot is connected with a wood screw. We used the flaps and a piece of g1 twintwist for grebaling. The knee works and the foot has a nice zombie club foot pose. It's a little shorter as well because I wanted it to look like he took it off another bot to keep going. I had tossed the original leg so this is as Bob Ross says "a happy little accident." Yeah a little too much spray filled in that detail. Dehumanizes the human part of the robot, don't you think? Lol Thanks. You're right about the flat. Semi gloss was what I had in the garage from a woodworking project. Keeping it cheap these days.
"Sparkless" is a great name for him, looks good! Please be sure to tell your son how much we like it!
I will. Thanks! The name is from the Netflix Siege show. You hear Jetfire call them "the sparkless" in episode 6 I believe.
That's all paint. I was thinking of using a soldering iron on it to distress some plastic. That would have been getting way to into it for the kid. Thanks for the compliment. I'd love to do a seeker one but I don't have a broken one. Lol.
