I mean, Dancouga wasn't even really up to snuff when it came out, with some truly bizarre design/articulation choices that left it pretty awkward and floppy.

Dancouga was released in 2002 it’s 18 years old... What are you comparing it to? When was MP-1 released ‘04?

Sounds like a great start! The Voltrons are two of my favorites. I doubt there will ever be nicer versions of those two characters than the SOCs.

Even without comparing it to anything else, it's got dumb design decisions like the floaty/spinny thigh joints that don't make any sense regardless.

I, personally, will always love my SOC Dan, and never get rid of it. It was my first SOC (back when $150 was an insane amount of money to spend on a "toy"), plus I'm very nostalgic to the design from owning the original Godaikin release.

But, there's no denying it had odd choices, even back in 2002. Big Moth having no head articulation is pretty inexcusable, as is the cats having no hip movement besides straight forward and back. I also think the detents in the outward shoulder movement are spaced way too far apart, and despite the fully combined robot mode having all the "right" points of articulation, the whole thing just feels stiff and undynamic.

A stark contrast to how their Black Wing looks.

Giving Big Moth neck articulation could've also solved the issue of Dancouga not having head articulation without the use of that little adapter piece.

    YES! Blackwing!
I hope it's cheaper than the Sentinel one. I don't even care that I'm mixing brands on my Dancouga... Blackwing is so damn cool I just can't say no. I'd never use him as a jetpack anyway.
Edit: Tamashii Webshop... Ugh. I'll still try.

That might actually be better, in some regards. Namely, that the pre-order window should actually be a window, and not like, a "blink".

I agree to degree. Are there weird design choices yes, I remember even back then complaints but at the same time what was the competition in ‘02? Not a lot, Gokin has come a LONG way since then. It’s easy to criticize an 18 year old toy, I would much rather criticize the Renewal version because it’s more deserving of a complete re-do than some minor tweaks. Should have never been a renewal in the first place.

Hahaha, you know, I remember when the Toynami Voltron came out. I thought he would never be topped. How wrong was I. But looking at Dairrugger, I see it very difficult. Even Daizuijin with his shortcomings is a true masterpiece.

I remember thinking the same thing about the Toynami Voltron. It was like the Voltron I always wanted...little did I know what was to come later. Nothing against it, but after getting the SOC, I don’t think I’ll ever need another one.

I was never much of a fan of Power Rangers or the Super Sentai stuff and I have a hard time separating Daizyujin from that. Taken on his own, though, he looks neat and very much in the style of Voltron.

Something better will always come as long as there is interest in the market for it.

Well, I'm thinking, specifically, the things that have always bugged me since it's release. Not even comparing it to modern releases. Even 18 years ago, not having any kind of neck joint was pretty lame.

Totally agree on your second point though. The renewal didn't fix the real "issues". It still looks and feels like an 18 year old toy. And it's even further accentuated by pairing with this super dynamic, modern take on Black Wing

Bandai could get a double sale from me with a new Dancouga to go with Black Wing. As it is, I'll be skipping and sticking to my Sentinel and Super Minipla combos.
