If I were to make a new Predator movie, I’d take it back to its horror roots and make it much smaller scale. I don’t know if anyone else thinks it’s interesting or not, but I’d love to see a movie where the Predator hunts astronauts on a Mars colony. That would really bring out the same sense of isolation the first one had when they were stuck in the jungle. Then you throw in the fact that damaged space suits would create a lot of tension, and you could even have more of a high tech scientific version of the first film’s finale where they’re crafting whatever weapons they have available to fight this thing.

    It’s on HBO now.
    Worth a watch?

Or is it like ‘Bad Times at the El Royal’, where you wait until it hits HBO and after watching it you wish you kept waiting?

It’s not really a rush out and see it kind of thing. I think it’s going to be one of those movies that’s on at like 6:30 on FX and you just tune for a couple parts you like after dinner until the show you watch that night comes on. I didn’t hate it as much as other people did, but it was objectively the worst solo Predator film from a story standpoint.

I want Dutch back. Arnold did two Conan movies (so far), multiple Terminator movies — but he only did one Predator and then the series moved on without him. I think that’s part of the problem.

My idea, would be to flip the concept — let Dutch be the “predator” and hunt down the Yuatja(s). Old Man Dutch would have to use his cunning and his previous experience, to survive the hunt.

His cunning, experience, and his cybernetic arm. :D

Predators was supposed to end with Dutch showing up leading a clan of Yautja, but Schwarzenegger wasn't available. It wouldn't have made the move better overall, but it would have been at least one cool thing about it. A movie like you're wanting would've been a great explanation for how that came about.

According to the Wikipedia article, Arnold was is discussion with Shane Black to return as Dutch for The Predator but declined due to the role being too short.

Omg I’m so glad they didn’t film that. Sounds like cheap fan service.

Saw this in cinema. Wasn't enthralled with it, but don't understand the level of hate it gets. I certainly enjoyed aspects of it. I also thought the 3D presentation was well done and added to the enjoyment, which sadly is not an option that has been made available on home video.

I don't put the original film on a pedestal, so perhaps that accounts for my complete lack of outrage. Think I enjoy the second one most of all for the ridiculousness of its action movie excess.

I despised the movie at first, but have grown to like it in subsequent viewings.

Don't get me wrong--In a universe where we got that ending, that's exactly what I would think too. But as it is, I think "cheap fan service ending" slightly wins out over leaving the audience hanging with "let's just stop here and not have an ending at all." In the other timeline, I'd be shitting on the fan service ending because it wouldn't even occur to me the film could've the way it did in this one.

that has been my reaction with various movies over the years. At first there's disappointment mixed with anger that they didn't make the movie you hoped for. After a while, you come to accept it for what it is rather than what you felt it should have been. But not always.

Do you know was there anything specific that led to you despising it? Often when people have a movie they're giving out about, I find they just describe everything about it as 'bad', 'terrible', 'stupid'... and sometimes I'm there wondering 'how was that bad?'

I think that it was just an overall departure from the previous movies and that some scenes didn't make a lot of sense really pissed me off. I remember being really mad leaving that movie. I vaguely remember standing up and saying it sucked.

Now I watch it and, I don't know, I just see it for what it is: A dark comedy that features the Predator creature. When I look at it like that, it's not nearly that bad.

It's still by no means a good movie. There is a lot of things wrong with it, but I am not nearly as bothered by those things anymore because I accept that the movie is not meant to be taken seriously.

The movie is stupid in a lot of things, but I was still entertained by it and that's what's important to me.

The original Predator is basically your Vietnam war setting.

Ehhhh. I wouldn't say that. The similar jungle evironment yes, but the location and human enemies were mainly South American.

Yeah, a few of us were talking about exactly that last year - Page 27 - that having a period/historical setting is about the only thing left to try AND could be interesting enough for people to maybe give a shit about this franchise again. If done right, of course.
