Yes, but that one is the exception. I don’t think any of the other retro carded figures have cell shading. (Maybe there is one or two I’m not thinking of, but in general these seem to be meant to invoke the old toybiz figures but modernized. And of course those did not have cell shading.) Wheras the vhs line seems to be meant to actually be recreating the figures from the show.
The SDCC or whatever Venom was both retro and cel-shaded? But I don’t recall any mainline figures that way, just the Walmart Spidey and that. Probably marks an intentional move by Hasbro to be able to do something vaguely appealing to collectors but not commit to windowed packaging forever.
Yea, character "tax" is one thing that I really can't get behind. Like I absolutely get increasing prices in general because inflation, increase in cost of materials and a whole host of other factors, but (as an example) there's not really any reason that the new Spider-Man Noir should have cost $30 (fortunately I caught it on a sale).
It's worth noting that the vhs packaging gimmick seems to be a Pulse exclusive thing. Doesn't seem to be something Hasbro plans to introduce at retail. Also, so far every vhs style packaged figure has been cell shaded, but not all cell shaded figures have been in vhs packaging. Though both of the ones I'm thinking of were also a store exclusive and convention exclusive respectively. The big take away is that the vhs style packages are a gimmick for their TAS sublines that they're selling through Pulse. There's likely not anything deeper about it.
I find it super satisfying that Rhino can be easily posed on one foot running. I can't believe I was going to pass on the figure. Both portraits are awesome. I'm going to backtrack and try to get more Spider-Man villains.
If you're talking about the 86 "animation accurate" colored version that's exclusive to Wally World that's likely because he and Hot Rod aren't actually trying to replicate the vintage packaging.
saw Quantumania, a solid adventure film, and I think it is high time we got Janet and Hank figures (we got Luis for pete's sake!)... they could even be the young suited versions for all I care... as for other figure choices from the film Spoiler they actually covered all the important bases, minus Janet and Hank... obviously MODOK, smaller Cassie, Jentorra the resistance leader...Kang soldier...maybe the weird cannon-head guy...
Spoiler Gonna need Rama-Tut too for me, though I assume that he'd probably come out with a Kang Dynasty wave.
Spoiler As soon as I saw the goddamn timechair I got excited but also thought, "Man if Hasbro hadn't biffed the Rider Series line, maybe we could've gotten an actual Rider Series MCU Kang w/timechair because the Rider Series would actually still be a thing." Damn it. I'm also really excited for the MCU Kang I preordered? I really dug Jonathan Majors here and can't wait for more. I might even pick up He Who Remains now.
too bad the marvel select figures don’t have as good articulation. All the pics I see of select figures are them standing statically like statues
It definitely looks good but I don’t have either so I’m not sure which has the better articulation (I definitely am one of the few who values articulation over all else mostly cause I like posing and taking pics of my action figures in dynamic poses) I know one of the main complaints for that selects hulk was the ab crunch that doesn’t actually crunch. I feel like that’s one of the main issues with selects. They have all or most of the same articulation joints as legends but are heavily hindered and don’t have the same range.
One of the biggest articulation issues with Selects, in my opinion, is that both the elbows and knees are single jointed, which is where they tend to lack the most range. Also there's a size discrepancy between the 2, Selects are typically closer to a 7" scale if I'm not mistaken.
Yeah that too. Good for those who are able to mix and match legends and selects but it’s too off putting for me. I think it’s passable for larger characters (ie juggernaut and hulk) but I definitely never considered using selects psylocke or the upcoming iceman as my main versions of those characters in my legends shelf. Too big out of scale and hampered articulation. Although if that new iceman goes on sale I will definitely be interested in buying it just for that ice stand. Looks sick
I have Select Juggernaut, Rhino, Colossus, and Venom... and they're great. But I have retired Colossus and Venom for the newest ML iterations. The biggest guys are still better than the ML versions, IMO, despite slightly less articulation. It's hard to get excited about their regular figures who are too large, but I am getting that Iceman for the slide and the fact that he might look less-awkward than most if you put him in a crouched stance.
Yes and no IMO. It's definitely a better looking face sculpt but it also looks like a modern face sculpt on the the classic costume. To me it would have looked better in one of their newer costumes.
