Bought Thrust last night. I hope I like him more in person.
I was wondering the same thing. I wonder what he has in store for us once BW Megatron drops.
He did post a new photo on Twitter within the last 24 hours, hopefully that's a good sign
This is amazing man! I remember you recreating a frame of this with the grey prototype shots of MP-21 and MP-20 before they even came out. Love seeing it finished at long last
Man, Shockwave looks fantastic here. Will definitely be repurchasing him this summer. Maybe in May for my 30th birthday, the 29+ designation would be very suitable
Awesome squad! How are you digging 17+? His changes are subtle, but effective. Particularly like how his grey front bumper breaks up the black on his chest.
Thundercracker’s perfect shade of blue aside, Thrust has been my favourite version of the MP-11 mould. Only one I haven’t experienced yet is Dirge. Soon, I hope!
So I got Optimus Primal last week. I’m gonna post a little spread here because more G1ers should definitely give Beast Wars a go if you haven’t already. BW is very much my ‘generation’ (born in ‘89), but I shunned it on TV in lieu of my brother’s G1 video cassettes. The first Chinese reissues of G1 had just appeared on the shelves in Portugal in the early 90s, so I didn’t even look at BW figures at the time. But I was so impressed with Dinobot’s reveal, I decided to finally watch the show with my wife last year, and we really liked it!
So what’s the deal with Optimus Primal?
Optimus!? Trukk not monkey, right??
One thing that’s great about Beast Wars is the voice acting. Just like G1, the (smaller) cast of characters are really excellently brought to life. Gary Chalk plays Primal. Right from the first episode we get a great look at many sides of the character. Like Optimus Prime in the More Than Meets The Eye pilot, he’s not perfect, he’s not a master of his temper, but he’s trying his best to lead his team.
And understand, these aren’t robots in disguise. Their animal ‘shells’ are to protect them from the high levels of energon in the atmosphere of the planet they (crash-)land on.
In an extremely 90s Power Rangers fashion, when transforming into robot mode they usually yell out their own name, followed by a code word (maximise for the good guys, terrorise for the baddies).
So, on with it: Optimus Primal, MAXIMISE!
MP-32’s transformation is delightfully simple. Think MP-21 levels of fluid and fun, but at a larger scale.
One fantastic thing about these Beast Wars MPs is their swappable faces. They are so damn expressive.
Unlike Optimus Prime relying fully on Cullen’s voice and the animation of body language, Primal actually has a mouth! He can smile!
Perfect for delivering his ‘well that’s just Prime’ catch-phrase (which can be used in a good or bad way!).
In ‘battle’ mode, his mouth plate ‘closes’ up, making for a very Prime face-sculpt:
It’s in this mode that be deploys his shoulder and forearm weapons, as well as a flip-out booster hidden in the small of his back.
Sadly no stand is included with MP-32, I’ll make use of MP-25’s when I get back to Ireland
He can pull off a one-footed run thanks to his lovely outward ankle tilt. Some really useful articulation here, including a ‘crotch’ tilt mainly used in beast mode, but also great in bot mode.
I particularly like how his angry face plate shows an open mouth from the side:
This isn’t your father’s Optimus, but he’s a great leader in his own right. Beast Wars is a funny and enjoyable show, with really good character development, thanks to its smaller cast.
It’s got as big a heart as G1, but it also contains some amazing nods and direction connections to its predecessor. In fact it’s a brilliant continuation of the story.
(Since TMNT’s Leo and Drizzt Do’Urden, I always loved a warrior wielding two swords!)
He may not be Optimus Prime, but he’s still just Prime!
MP-21 Bumblebee... the only bee that doesn't make me run in fear.
Great feature on Primal, @Sam! Makes me want to take mine off the shelf and play with him while watching Beast Wars. It’s been many years since I last watched it and it is indeed a fantastic series. Glad you’re enjoying it!
Will you be home in time to receive BW Megatron when he ships in a few weeks? It’s going to be fun to pair the two leaders!
Thanks, I try to pose them dynamically some are harder than others, love the + finish on the figure, I didn't think at first it would make much difference but that purple helps him standout so much. I can't imagine how much shelf presence 43 is gonna command especially with him being as big as 36, cannot wait to pose them side by side.
Like how you jimmied him into Hound's sit - from that angle it's really convincing
I had to cut hum in half for that!! Just kidding!!
His legs were tucked up around his back!! It was all "light-and-angle" creating the illusion.
...think I had too much caffeine today.
Anyhoo... Thanks again!!
Sorry guys to make some of you worried.
To be honest, these past few days had.been torrid for me as my battle with cancer kept coming up empty. But.i am not giving up yet.
And while I fight, have a Red.
Still smoking after all these years. Tisk, tisk.
I'm rooting for you to beat your cancer!!! Not only did you report in, but spoil us with a great photo and pose. Thanks!
Wishing the best for you, TC! Thanks for letting us know what’s been going on, and thanks for the great photo.
Keep fighting my brother. We’re all with you.
For those of you who made the switch from CHUG to Masterpiece, do you have any regrets?
