I didn't see a thread here about this classic series, but since my wife and I rarely find a show we both like, we decided to watch some old series from our childhood to watch.

We are most of the way through season 1 now. The plots have been wacky fun classic TV standards. We make fun of all the things that today would NEVER be done because they are stereotypes, or taboo like smoking indoors, pregnant women drinking, etc, and downright sexual harassment by every male crew member on the series to every woman who walks on the ship.

Series guest stars are like a history book of TV actors. Just last night they featured Leslie Neilson and Monty Hall, for example.

So who else watched this series?

It IS fun and delightfully dated...bit STILL only like the world's five-billionth ridiculous, serial, rom-com TV show, jam-packed with absurdity and guest-stars galore though it may have been.

If you two are looking for an equivalent experience to share which is WAY better then I'd suggest "Frasier."

Watched another season 1 episode last night. They had two guests I recognized.

Pat Morita (Arnold from Happy Days, at the time this was playing) played a rich Japanese businessman who was trying to buy an American electronics firm from another passanger. He had the repeating comical habit of saying phrases in reverse ("finding a haystack in a needle", etc.) I'd seen Pat in a previous episode as one of the men painting the captain's cabin (badly). We have already seen Marion, Potsy and one of Richy's girlfriends on the Loveboat this season.

The only recognizable face was Jan from the Brady Bunch as a spoiled rich girl who tried to make Gohpher into a socialist rebel. We have already seen Marsha and the mom from Brady Bunch on this season.

I would love to go back and watch this show and Fantasy Island. I just don't have enough hours in the day.

Most important question: Has Charo shown up yet??!! I hear she made a couple of appearances on TLB...

My parents used to watch this show all the time. I'd sit there and watch it with them but I don't remember much about it. I do remember that the trade off was them letting me watch the Muppet Show :D

From what I found out the series crossed over with Fantasy Island, Charlie's Angels and some other series. I'm downloading the crossover episode and playing them in order too. First crossover is an episode Charlie's Angels that takes place between season 1 and 2 of the Love Boat, where the Angels solve a crime on the Pacific Princess and the Love Boat stars make cameos.

Yes, Charo did appear already. She was one of the few actors who played multiple times as the SAME character, a Mexican woman named April Lopez. She tries to sneak onboard the boat to get to America illegally, but they catch her. She plays the guitar and sings, and wins their hearts, and the Captain is able to get the cruise line to hire her as an entertainer on another ship. So while she never legally move to America, she can work on the ships that port there (The Pacific Princess is out a British owned ship).

I read she was a guest on the show 8 times!!!

I'm not even done with the first season and I spotted one woman playing THREE different characters so far, another who played 2 women, and an actor who played two different men.

Wow! I didn't know about those crossovers! Makes sense though, I think they were all Aaron Spelling shows.

Ah, the good old days of tv... when you could get away with stuff like that.

All this talk about old tv is making me wish I had time to watch "CHiPs," "The Incredible Hulk," and "The Greatest American Hero."

Jimmy Walker was one of the earliest guests on the series. He played an exterminator who's girlfriend was leaving him because he woud not commit to marriage. He wanted to win her back, but didn't want to get married. The girlfriend shared a cabin with Susanne Somers (Crissy from Three's Company).

It's fun when TV producers acknowledge their other shows. My personal Knight Rider headcanon is that Kitt was created from scavenged Cylon technology after the events of Galactica 1980. (Knight Rider and both of the older Galactica series were Glen A. Larson shows.)

Didn't they always say that a celebrity knew their career was over when they made a guest appearance on The Love Boat? :lol

Maybe some of the older actors, it was an easy paycheck for just walking around a cruise ship for 15 minutes on screen. Oldest one I was surprised to see so far was the wife from the Honeymooners. This show also had young people just starting, and stars of other shows who were cross promoting their shows.

On the contrary though, Pat Morita, for instance, was known for being Arnold on Happy Days, but years after this went on to the the Katate Kid movies, so his career was stil going up!

Leslie Nielson was just ending his serious acting career, but was just starting his comedy career when he appeared in season 1 of the Love Boat.

Solid choice. I'll never be able to forget good old Dean Travers' standard line: "Oh Tripper? Aren't you the one who lives with...two girls?"

Solid tv right there. Just like every entrance Lenny and Squiggy would make on Laverne and Shirley.

So as far as I can tell the LBU (Love Boat Universe) consisted of the Love Boat (and it's several made for TV movies), Charlie's Angels and Fantasy Island. There was also a 1996 episode of Martin and a 2005 episode of King of Queens with Love Boat actors appearing IN CHARACTER so those series are part of that universe too.

Not that it's a new thing. I recall the Jack Benny show and the Burns and Allen show crossing over. Is that the BBU (Burns/Benny Universe?)

I think Norman Lear may have them all beat with "All in the Family" and the many spin-offs and spin-offs of the spin-offs.
All in the Family -> Maude-> Good Times.
All in the Family -> The Jeffersons -> Checking In
All in the Family -> Archie Bunker's Place -> Gloria
All in the Family -> 704 Hauser

The Happy Days Universe is pretty big as well.

Fun fact: The Donna Reed show shares a universe with Dennis the Menace
