Godzilla vs Kong 4/10- Was looking forward to this like many but I guess two hours of monsters kicking ass is too complicated of a concept for filmmakers. Annoying, useless characters that add nothing to the movie and could've easily been left out. Especially the two kids and that Bernie dude. I would've given this a 10/10 if those three got killed.

Two hours of contextless monster fighting does not a movie make. However I wholeheartedly agree that the human based connective tissue was......awful. Like I enjoyed it, but hot damn did I probably intellectually check out when a person started talking.

    Pixels - 6.5/10
Went in with low expectations, but did have a few laughs. Dumb plot. But it was nostalgic to see the 8bit games come to life. Very weak recommend.

    Godzilla vs. Kong

I didn't know these movies could make their characters even more throwaway. Godzilla vs. Kong manages to not only do that, but also throw out what was established with the monsters in the previous movie. I sat through choppy action scenes from the perspective of people making Bay-esque sex jokes only for most of the lore that said movie established be thrown out. Seriously, why does a megacorporation have something that once belonged to an ecoterrorist organization?

This movie just barely scrapes into coherent territory. It's as close to just cobbling together the clips people want to see on YouTube as I can imagine being possible without just fully compromising the whole thing. Things just happen and we are on to the next effects scene, devil may care about how much it makes sense. It's pretty impressive the villain is still so rich. I feel like I could wake up for a glass of milk at 3:00am and somehow end up in their vault with a suitcase of cash.

Not to mention that Godzilla is pretty inconsistent with his previous depiction. In the prior films, he had this serenity to his demeanor that gave off an air of wisdom and implicit badassery. Here, he's like a school bully or TFWer who just likes to shove people around when their presence pisses him off. He fights nothing like he did in the prior two movies for most of the run time
and when he finally does, the fight plays out exactly like I imagined it would. I'll boost it higher than Kong: Skull Island for that.

    3.25/10.

    The Color Out of Space
    6.9/10

I felt the dread build up was not strong enough through the middle. The beginning was strong and the ending was very unsettling which was a strong point. So for the most part a good movie just compared to things like Annihilation the horror build up kind of stumbles a tad. The unsettling parts were so good and I just wanted more of that.

I just wish the Director could continue and make his planned movies. More Cosmic Horror like this would only be a good thing.

    Chaos Walking 4/10

Tom Holland and Daisy ridley spending 90% of the film walking through forests accompanied by Tom narrating his own thoughts.

the story is too basic and just a bit of a mess overall

    Kong: Skull Island 10/10

I haven't seen Godzilla vs Kong yet so I'm reserving my thoughts until I do and I'm avoiding spoilers.

    The sound of metal 9/10

This is definitely not the kind of film for those in the mood for a sugary superhero film or a bombastic showdown between King Kong and Godzilla but it’s probably one of the most unique and interesting films I’ve seen in a while.

For those not familiar it’s essentially an indie flick that tells the sad story of the impact on a rock drummers life when he starts to lose his hearing but in practice the film is more ambitious in its storytelling in that the experimental audio is just as important at conveying the events portrayed as what you see and what is said.

The film also works as a loving tribute to the deaf community and to people’s resilience, creativity and self-expression in the face of hardships.

It’s an indie flick so it’s slow but for those willing to invest their attention and concentration into this movie it’s a heartwarming, melancholic and life-enriching movie without ever becoming cheesy or succumbing to a happily ever after resolution to its many conflicts.

    Okay, let's see

    Wes Craven's Shocker 4/10
I only watched this one because I'd seen it at a video store back in the 90s, but was too young to watch it then. Then I saw it on HBO Max a week or two ago, and decided to watch it, finally. Pretty lousy movie, I'm talking Troll 2 bad. My favorite part was the fight near the end, which was so bad it was hilarious.

    Monkey Shines 6/10
This one wasn't nearly as bad, and I watched it for the same dumb reason. It was nice to see a Romero horror film that didn't have walking corpses, even of it was a slow burn into a psychological thriller with a pretty great finale, although that jumpscare near the end felt completely pointless

    The Mummy (1999) 8/10
My generation might've been introduced to Brendan Fraser with Encino Man, but his acting REALLY shined in this one. Admittedly, this was the first time I'd seen it in its entirety, having seen it in bits and pieces on cable television over the last two decades. Some of the effects didn't age well, but it's a fun ride nonetheless

    Child's Play 3 5/10
The only numbered "Child's Play" movie I hadn't seen before this week, was a pretty weak movie. The kid that played Tyler was great, and it certainly seemed like they got Brad Douriff a voice coach for the voodoo curse bits because it sounded like genuine French this time rather than the phonetic gobbledygook he sputters for the "voodoo curse" bits in the other Chucky movies. The soundtrack felt cheap, it reminded me of the "Goosebumps" TV series with the frantic skittering strings.

    A Clockwork Orange 6/10
Never too late to see a beautifully-framed Kubrick movie.

    Joker (2019) 8/10
    Great movie

    Jojo Rabbit 9/10
This one surprised the HELL out of me. I used Thor 3 as my example of Taika Watiti's directorial style, and while the fun of the third Thor movie was there, there were social messages and the audience got to see a side to WWII we hardly ever get to see: civilian life in the midst of the Reich. Hell, there was a scene where I sat mouth agape at what the HELL just happened off-screen. All the actors were good, and it was great to see Sam Rockwell play a dickhead (which he's so often cast as) who's not a shitheel for once. Fuck, I could go on and on about this movie. Fuck, Stephen Merchant is a tall motherfucker.

    Misery 9/10
Goddamn, Kathy Bates is great in this one.

    Marvel mini-marathon, inspired by TFATWS:

    CA:TWS - 9/10

Only my second time to see this, and I remembered very little. The birth of what would become TFATWS. Mackie is perfect in this role. Fantastic movie.

    Civil War - 10/10

Honestly, pound for pound, this is probably my favorite MCU movie. It has funny moments, emotional moments, and the airport scene is an all-time classic.

and since I've never seen it, I took the time to watch Thor: The Dark World - 8.5/10

I can't believe this is what people think is the worst MCU movie. I thought it was great.

Yeah, I don't get the hate, either. It wasn't the best, but neither was it the worst, even back when it came out. And there's been much worse since.
