Having a bit of a Prime time this weekend...so, with no shortage of crappy phone photos, here's a small review of a simple toy for younger children, that also happens to be an Optimus, and so is going up in my Prime line. Here's the tin, and what it says on it. TRUKK NOT MUNKY; haha if he did Two-Step himself down the evolutionary twig and turn into a gorilla despite being advertised as a truck that would have been hysterical. Optimus rolls well in this mode... ...windows one with the hull, so clearly he's transporting vampires again. In Albion we call the trunk the boot; Optimus must be a Brit! "What immortal hand or eye..." Doesn't quite peg together below the grille. Oh well. This is how he got into this state... START (unpeg the truck nose from the back of his hips) CHANGE (swing it around to the other side of his body and thrill as his limbs close up) FINISH (peg in the cab and fold the exhaust pipes back up if they've been pushed down) (requires a bit of force to unstick him to initiate transformation in either direction. Not sure how kid-friendly this is) ...and this is how he was before (Bizarro not do review like this in Bizarro world) Robot mode has quite a lot of detail, somewhat lost in the grey... He has (of course) a gimmick! Pull my finger. No wait I mean press this button... (Poor Optimus, he looks so peeved) BATTLE MASK ACTIVATE! Not the same eyes, alas. But suitably warlike, and now his polo-neck resembles two rows of teeth. Optimus wants faces. Deny him weapons, and how shall he obtain them? *trembles uncontrollably* He has articulation! And you've now seen all of it. Sleek and kibble-free... ...so it's actually quite a good interpretation of his AOE/TLK Movie model. In those terms, at least. Ready to do battle! (Am wondering if there are any construct-bot weapons I could get for him, for when TLKRTSVOP wants his gear back.) Compadre comparison. Turbo Changer Optimus is precisely what he was meant to be: a straightforward and limited toy for small kids. I thought G1 Runabout was great back then, as well as Topspin and Twin Twist. Is this as great a toy as those were? Well, maybe. You'd have to ask a child. In the meantime, he's a Prime, and that's what I wanted him for. As ever, YMMV. We now return you to dreams of G1!
I got one Saturday and it's absurd how much silly fun these simple guys are. Hasbro puts a lot more effort into designing these than they have to and it shows. Definitely a product you can't judge on appearance alone because it's designed to be fun and played with.
