Most of the KOs we see around here have differences in size and molding from the originals, but when it's super obvious that the entire transformation scheme and design has been lifted wholesale from a very specific source figure, I think it's fair to call it a KO.

Also, Gobot Stacks has never shared any significant design similarities with G1 Optimus Prime. Both figures were probably designed around 1982-ish, so they may have been developed in relative isolation (Diaclone and Machine Robo being roughly concurrent).

It's rare to see an established brand (like Tobots) just lift an entire design from a major source. I can't think of many examples off the top of my head... but maybe crossing national boundaries may make it less transgressive (or legally risky).

I don't think there was ever any KO of the Viper version of this mold in any scale. Just an oversized blue Powerglide.

    Damn, that's a big 'un.

I feel so tempted. On the other hand... I'm sure a OSKO Earthrise Optimus is only a year away... hmmmmm... tough call :inquisiti

That’s exactly why you need this one.

    Who makes it?

Aoyi / Black Mamba (part of the same line as the oversized Hound, & Sideswipe that are already out) A Megatron is hot on his heels as is Red Alert.

Why though? I've already got the slightly oversized version. And the Earthrise mold is just so much better. I already feel weirdly "tricked" by Hasbro into buying a Prime figure that already feels obsolete.

If you look on the site, it's specified: Aoyi

I have the original as opposed to the KO, and it's not a lot of fun - very fragile as befitting an early 3P release.

If the KO is anything like the original, I'd save your money.

Wait so are all those CW/TR/POTP Legends scales that are on eBay for $8 from China really legit? I've bought them always assuming they're KOs.

I've bought Shockwave, Brawn, and two Vipers. (One Viper was sent as a replacement, the first one had stress marks and 2 left tail fins.) I thought that the plastic felt a little iffy on these, but all I have to compare them to are POTP ones I bought at retail. Did the quality jump that much over 3 sublines?

Not arguing, of course. Just legitimately curious.

No, I get it. It's a bit confusing. There are a ton of KO and OSKO Legends online.

BUT... I think that they have only done the Powerglide version of that mold... in both the normal red, AND in a blue variant.

HOWEVER... Viper actually has a totally different face-sculpt from Powerglide, and has a Cobra-specific deco. To my knowledge, there has been no KO of the exact Viper version... only blue Powerglides. Which are close, but not quite the same thing.

Well it really depends on what you mean by “legit.”

Nearly all of these products, whether the community calls them 3p or KO, are made in violation of intellectual property laws.

A lot of this confusion comes from the terminology used here versus the business or legal realm. This is because IP definitions are vague and occasionally lag behind real-world scenarios. At any rate, these legend scale figures are most-likely illegitimate products, but that’s largely for Hasbro and courts to decide.

I don't think he's questioning whether KOs are "legit" in the legal sense.

I think he's just wondering if the stuff he was buying expecting KOs might actually be official product (or at least factory-stolen official stuff, which also happens).

Actually, many KOs not illegitimate, not infringing upon copyright. With IP infringement, they only "are" until proven so. Kirkland brand products are technically "KO" products, for example.

So I got this as a New Year gift to my kid. Inb4 "Not Actual Transformer", it transforms and is a Hasbro product. But is it a KO? Or is it so irrelevant they just never bothered?
