I mean.... the term 3rd party exists....

Btw anyone knows if its actually worth putting a deposit in on TFdirect? their preorder policy seems to state that it only reserves you for 2 weeks, but that seems a bit odd for stuff months out... Another thing is do they have you pay upfront or when it's released?

    Sir Paul,

Hoping you get both ko devs in, and fingers crossed for an orange version down the road.

Almost 2 years ago, combiner toys from the 80s were KO’d and sold.

The packaging they put these older version figures in utilized the box art from the (at the time) relatively recent CW series. So, people that were purchasing the sets based on box art & expecting a CW figure would’ve been surprised to find inside a KO of the G1 toy (in some instances, in G2 colors).

I thought there was a post or few where people uploaded pics of those boxes and discussed what was actually inside, but I couldn’t find it to link you to it here for context. However, heres a link to what was sold within the box :
    Search - SirToys.com

    F5388FB3-CF7A-4DBD-A55E-4A3B5F8CD760.jpeg
I think Paul, in these instances, had the title named that way because of the box art.

CBB cool become brave came along not long after and produced KOs of the CW molds.

Bottom line/translation being... you can’t trust the images or sizes produced on a KO box to be confirmation of what is inside. While that devy box might look yellow, it’s probably more to do with the image, as it seems more like the same lime green image on the hasbro box to me.

I’m looking forward to seeing the blurr comparison pics @SirToys uses when he gets the undersized(?) CWmold devy in. With all those colorful (and under-speculation sized) Gestalts revealed, I’m wondering if Paul should promote a particular combiner of some sorts to the ranks of jazz, warpath & blurr to also stand in as the default scale comparator.

.... or perhaps he could use that occasionally seen character from some of his older comparison pics called, a ruler. ;)

I think this new devy will be ruler-worthy and cheap-kitchen-scale-worthy :)

My interest peaked at an OS KO but that's a bit too big.

Yellow devs was shown at the kofair... there's a yellow version and a green version (if the packaged version is anything to go by).

Not excited about it being a possible downscaled cw devs, but they'll still find a home here.

3P is unofficial though. In most general use cases, 3P TFs are actually KOs (and what you think of as completely copied TFs, right down to the logos, are known as counterfeit).

does long haul still have the sideways elbow action? or did that get upgraded and just has classic color? there's a difference between a UW and CW Devy ko that makes it worth considering.

Fansproject's Steel Core is 3rd party but it isn't a KO of anything, Same with the Glacia Lords. (They might be very loosly inspired by a comic panel and a Kre-O set) but that would be like saying any Toy robot Dinosaur is ripping of Power Rangers.

Eh... Not all 3rd Parties are unofficial. Note that there are official 3rd Party licensed products.

The definitions get sort of muddy. For the most part, there's just a set of terms that we have adapted to the Transformers collecting sphere, and we expect them to be sort of consistent in those discussions... but more broadly, those terms don't always refer to the same things.

    I've always just gone for

3rd party -- new molds based upon existing IP. Can be licensed (legal 3P) may be unlicensed (possible IP infringement)
KO -- copies of existing molds, sometimes up or down sized
4th party -- a marketing term so sites can sell KOs without saying they do :D

So 3rd party isn't KO in the case that there is nothing to knock off. They are, however, possibly infringing on an established IP. Why possibly? Because saying they are is accusing them of a crime which is potentially libel since they can argue against the infringement (not a 1:1 copy but rather designed in the style of)

Yeah, I think that's the generally-accepted usage in the TF fandom.
