Aww yes. The 5 BW figures we've gotten in generations line over the past 7 years and now 3 (4 if you count the repaint) BW MPs that have been produced after a decade of masterpieces. Sorry we're hogging your transformers production line. I know you desperately need an Optimus v3 update.

As a guy who's only into the G1 MPs, my attitude towards BW MPs and MPMs is that I look forward to developments and advancements made on those figures that can be applied to future G1 MPs. I really dig Dinobot's stand and hope TT will make it widely available like they did their earlier clear stand (it's cool, but the peg breaks easily and doesn't do a great job of holding up heavier figures like the vans and Fusos). More articulation, higher parts count, more gimmicks and accessories, more paint, more screen accuracy... this is all stuff I've wanted from the beginning, even if I didn't know it. I'm happy to pay for it, too, as this is really the only thing I buy for myself.

C'mon, TT, go for the MP trifecta and reveal a G1 MP before the year's over! How nuts would it be to have Bay, BW, and G1 fans all happy at the same time?

I think he was using the stock response a lot of us do whenever that particular poster writes a screed about how it is all dankness, and everything sucks and that he’s going away so that we suffer without the light of his generally unpleasant attitude to sustain us ;)

I still hope people pony up the $250 or whatever Dinobot ends up costing because we still have half a dozen deluxe cars to go!

I am having a hard time understanding why Dinobot costs so much more than Megatron based on solely on the physical figures. Dinobot doesn't seem any bigger, more complex, more heavily painted, have more parts/accessories/gimmicks than Megatron... I'm thinking it's more to do with anticipated sales. G1 Megatron is possibly the second most recognizable and popular character in the entire franchise with wide appeal and TT knew they'd have a massive seller on their hands (and they did) and were able to make him more affordable. Dinobot might be one of the most popular characters in BW, but the fact is that not a lot of nerds know who he is outside of BW nerds. I know I didn't until a year or two ago when Primal arrived and BW fans started wishing for an MP Dinobot. TT must be anticipating far lower sales for this figure and had to price him accordingly.

Dinobot is fucking gorgeous. And huge. And amazing. Sign me up.

Could live without the stand though. When a figure is this expensive, I'd rather save the $10 or whatever than pay for a stand I don't have room for and end up just tossing in a drawer hehe.

But yeah, this guy is spot on.

Retrax bashing? Did I step into a timewarp back to the late 90's alt.toys.transformers newsgroup?

Okay, so if you take a good look at the beast mode pics, and think about how he’ll transform, you can see a lot of it. Dinobot basically turns inside-out. The robot mode chest is big and barreled like on the show, and it’d hold those parts that collapse into it. I’m curious to see his back, where I’m guessing you’ll have some kibble, but he’s pretty impressive.

So then you’re going to compare that parts count to something of a similar size. I’m going to say Inferno. It’s a big jump. If you’re looking carefully at the pictures, you’ll see a lot of hinges and parts that come together from the beast mode to form the robot mode. That’s probably your parts count jump.

Now, they might be goosing the price some. That’s totally possible. The thing is though is that Dinobot isn’t just a popular BW character. You have realize that he’s also the the most important character in Beast Wars, so people are dying for him. You may not know him, but most people that don’t know G1 well barely know anyone beyond Prime and Megatron, and maybe one or two others, so don’t mistake the gap between your awareness as an actual measure of importance.

I feel like maybe you've misunderstood what I said. I'm not arguing about Dinobot's complexitiy - he looks extremely complex with a high parts count, I'm saying that it doesn't look like significantly more than Megatron's. Same with all the accessories. The modular stand looks on par with Megatron's stock and barrel/stand.

And I agree that the average non-fan doesn't really recognize anyone from G1 outside of a handful, but Megatron is one of those. G1 Megatron is an iconic pop culture character, like Skeletor and Cobra Commander. I know BW fans are nuts about Dinobot, but outside of BW fans he's not even close to the same level of cultural significance and popularity as Megatron, even among TF fans. I'm basing this not only on myself, but fellow nerds I talk to (I'm in a nerd industry) who don't know anything about BW unless they're BW fans, except that Optimus was a gorilla ((WINK)). The point I was trying to make is that Dinobot, even if he was priced the same as Megatron, just isn't going to sell a similar amount of units. Not even close, I think. Maybe not even close to Ultra Magnus. And sales of Primal and Cheetor already gave TT an indicator of what to expect, albeit with a larger, more expensive figure, no matter how integral he is to BW. I think this is the best explanation for why a figure of similar size and complexity/parts count to Megatron is priced so much higher. In other words, Megatron might've been priced higher, too, if he wasn't expected to be a sales juggernaut.

I'm sure the thing is spot on accurate, but man is it ugly. Not my jam. Take your pick whether I'm taking about Dinobot or Barricade...

I take it back...I don't think Barricade is spot on.

Hmm.. maybe he's what 8 months out and preorders orders and stock photos are up before the magazine or generation book. They may be planning another reveal pretty soon.

No, I totally got what you were saying. Im just trying to make clear that the high price is from something, and that a supposed litmus test of popularity ain’t it. It’s still a high price though. You can’t really base price on relative popularlity, particularly where you’re arguing it’d be lower.

Don’t forget though that Dinobot is supposedly more popular in Japan because he’s culturally relevant there. He subscribed to a warrior’s code that was quite clearly modelled after bushido. We do this a lot on here where we forget that they’re also marketing to a Japanese market that had massively different perceptions.

My guess here is that a good chunk of the price came down to the amount of development they put into him, and they really want to see how well this kind of not-frontline character can do for them. That said, Takara’d perception of his popularity could be very different from yours.

I dig what you are saying here! With all these improvements it is gonna be one heck of a ride from here on out!

*conspiracy theory time* why did they blackout the MP photo in the Generations book just to reveal it 3 days before the book is released? (with the early release on the 15). Something seems amiss..........

The Gold Disk made me think Dinobot just won a Gold Record for this.
