They stole the engineering, but they weren't straight KOs. They removed the hip kibble and changed aspects of the legs to accomodate. And the Coneheads weren't 'KOs' because the Coneheads didn't exist in MP format. They did steal much of the engineering design, though, (was actually based off custom made Coneheads) and those are what I know specifically received C&D letters. At TFsource and some small shop that was going to carry an exclusive G2 Ramjet.

to be honest, idk who's paying even that ¥23,000.. I'm getting Megatron 2.0 for ¥18,400 from hlj with the pre-order. Seems silly not to take advantage of the overseas pre-order sites..

On TT's big board he has to rank pretty high
*carbot ( easier to produce; more likely to sell)
    *diaclone
*likely to come with plenty of accessories
*military vehicle, most likely real world. in most of the hobby shops once you get past the models its like walking into Goldfish.Surplus stuff, military models and replica guns. Being these are for the most part the same places you can get Transformers he has crossover appeal. Same with Bruticus

All seven+are KOs no matter how you slice it because they took an existing mold and replicated it. Yes there are alterations but that doesn't de-ko them. It's still a knock off of the MP3 mold down to the details and most of the accessories. They're no less KOs than the old four star stuff that was also heavily altered but was still directly taking both the design and engineering of existing toys.
Do people in Japan even pay that price?

If the Google Translation of the PDF is remotely accurate, I think the MP line recently won a design award:

Here's a link to the PDF press release.

Would any Japanese speakers care to shed some light on the details?

I wish I knew enough Japanese to read it. Judging from the picture though I would assume that it's an award to Hironori Kobayashi specifically as those are all the molds up to Laserwave that he designed.

Was it confirmed that TakaraTomy or the line as a whole was recieving the award as a whole? I see I'm not the only one noticing that it's only one designer's molds featured; I feel like there must be a reason for that.

I think stealing the engineering is weak, but I could probably take either side of the argument that they're all KOs depending on the day. I'm more interested in what makes that something Hasbro will take action on vs something that's a spitting image, but has an original transformation, though.

Likeness as infringement on an IP is harder to win in court while engineering is much easier.

On a likeness, you'd need to first show that the IP is well known. Enough to be infringed on in the first place, and I don't know the details, but that's really hard. It's one of the reasons DC changed Batman's emblem from just a black bat to the bat in the yellow oval for a couple of decades - the latter could be copy written. Now, of course, a stylized bat is synonymous, so they went back to it.

Engineering is easier because the law around it is much clearer and robust around the world, or so I've been told. It's a physical thing where you go into court with a piece stamped x date and your patent and plans for it and can say that it came first. Basically, HasTak can protect the transformation sequence because they can actually say that it was stolen from a specific piece of their property.

All that being said though, surely 30 years has to be long enough to say that the image of Optimus or Megatron is famously their IP for a long enough period to win? I find it weird that they haven't been able to go that route with the bigger 3Ps.

Just saw this (very blurry) picture on the Masterpiece Collectors group on Facebook. Apparently it is from the upcoming generations book.

Its not for the MP line from what I have seen. The dinobot design is 100% the original toy.
