I was thinking about picking up the newer G1 series sets on dvd. Is the quality decent? Are there older released sets? If so, which one is the one to get?
Don't get the Chinese bootleg that I have, the episodes are all out of order. I'm pretty sure "B-O-T" was not the first episode of the series.
The review I read on The Digital Bits was quite favorable. Apparently Shout succeeded in restoring the series to the best it could possibly be where Rhino failed. I'm probably going to wait to get it until the complete series Matrix set becomes available later this year.
That's a good idea. I didn't even know they were coming out with a full set! What's the cost? If it's under $200. It's mine
Man I hope the mistakes Rhino made are all fixed, like in Fire on the Mountain and War of the Dinobots.
I just preordered my Matrix of Leadership set .It says they will be shopping as of July 1st. Can't wait ,besides from seeing a few on the comp ,I havent seen these since i was a kid .WOOHOO
I have the 1st season from Shout if there are any episode specific questions I can try to answer them. I don't know exact audio and video errors on the previous releases so let me know. I just popped in disc 1 to watch now and an option to watch multi-part episodes seemlessly came up. Thats pretty cool.
In MTMTE part 3 the mountain that the Decepticon cruiser takes off of was only half there in the Rhino release. In the original broadcast version you can see the ship taking off with the Autobots watching in a worm's eye view.
Transformers (Generation One) was originally released on DVD in 2002 by Rhino. Since then Rhino's sets have gone out of print due to their loss of rights to the show. Although the show was released in its completion Rhino's release was met with controversy due to its quality. Instead of using the footage used for broadcasting Rhino used early workprint reels for many episodes, particularly in the first season. Although these workprints were in overall much better quality in terms of sharpness, clarity, and color they held many animation mistakes that weren't present in the broadcast version, Starscream being painted as Thundercracker numerous times for one example. Rhino also saw fit to create a 5.1 audio track that contained many newly added sound effects. This wouldn't be a problem, except the 2.0 stereo track, which was supposed to be based upon the unaltered audio of the broadcast version, still contained many of these new sound effects on numerous episodes. This, coupled with the mistake laden workprint footage, gave many fans an unsatisfactory experience from Rhino's DVD release. Shout! Factory's upcoming re-release supposedly corrects the mistakes and alterations of Rhino's release. They've claimed to have looked over all of the footage available and restored the broadcast footage where it was previously not present. They've also said to have created an all new 2.0 stereo audio track based on the original mono track thus doing away with the jarring and unfamiliar sound effects. To get an example of the differences between the broadcast and workprint footage there are several videos on YouTube that exemplify them. Also, TVShowsOnDVD.com recently posted several clips from Shout! Factory's upcoming re-release of season one, giving us an example of what to expect from them. I just compared it to the Rhino release and didn't notice any scene difference. Both versions I watched showed the Autobots from behind watching at the side of the mountain as the Decepticons flew away. If it's the same scene we're talking about. I will say the new release from Shout looks alittle better and the sound comes across louder and clearer. I don't own any surround sound system but it was noticably different just through my TV.
Thanks for the links. I knew they planned on remastering stuff but from what I've seen from the clips it will look so much better.
