Last night I caught myself with MTMTE as I could no longer contain myself by waiting for a TPB. and...Wow.

I was very concerned how Megatron would be portrayed going forward. I reeled at the sight of a red Autobot logo on his chest and refused to accept it. I was very concerned that the legacy of the character would be destroyed, as he is more of a complex character than most TFs in my opinion.

After reading 28 & 29, I am intrigued. I love Chromedome, Rodimus, Magnus, Swerve Cyclonus and all the others..but I am most intrigued by how Megatron will evolve. How did he survive the trial? How did he manage to gain confidence to Captain the Guiding Light? How is he REALLY handing Starscream's testimony?

The old Megatron would be telling everyone that he would crush, cripple and eviscerate everyone...yet the current version is careful, adapting and calm.

His dialogue with Whirl? Actually increased my interest in Whirl which I didn't think was possible.

So where is this headed? Has Megatron seen the light or been paid a visit by Chromedome? Of is he plotting and waiting for the opportune time to unleash revenge? Will he seek to usurp Galvatron as Leader of the Decepticons again?
    And who is Terminus?

I'm really curious as to what everyone thinks about Megatron's direction. All of the characters are amazing, but I am captivated by Megatron can become here.

The seeds for Megatron's switch go all the way back to the ongoing with Prime and him talking on Omega Supreme about their past, when Optimus said they could shake hands, walk out, and end the war, and Megatron looked away like he was actually considering it, but couldn't bring himself to it. Honestly, I think Megatron's finally seen the light. Think about it from his point of view:

When he returned in RiD, the entire planet turned against him, including some of his own. Not because they didn't want him to take over per se, but because they were tired of the war PERIOD. Then, they CHOSE Starscream, who gloated his triumph over Megatron, who I believe was capable of hearing him despite not being able to do anything. Left alone, with no one to help talk him into the course of violence, and left with just his thoughts and Starscream's tirade about how the people voted for HIM, he started thinking maybe he was wrong.

Next up, Shockwave brings him back to use as a doorway for his plans. This brings back memories of the time before (form defines function, every form serves a purpose), when he's forced to, due to what he became (in this case the space bridge), serve a function he doesn't agree with. Once he's free from that, him and Bumblebee have time to talk, really seem to start becoming friends, and he even mentions that he's realized he lost when he ordered fighting to begin. After that, Bumblebee helps him see the error of his way, prevents him from killing needlessly, and then dies.

Finally, add in Shockwave throwing his own rhetoric at him in a twisted way. His constant digging at Megatron about his fight being about equality, and twisting his words against him, plus throwing in insults to Megatron helped him see he actually formed a friendship with Bumblebee, and completely accept the errors of his way.

Wow that was long. But the point is, I see this as an actual change in character, and hopefully it sticks. I like Autobot Megatron. It gives him a whole new dynamic and layer to the character of Megatron, and also makes for some interesting stories about him trying for redemption. Will he get it? Will he ultimately fail and go back to the Decepticons? Hopefully he stays the course, but it will be a fun ride either way!

I hope that this change in perspective doesn't lead to a complete and unrealistic reinvention of the character. I like the idea of Megatron seeing the light, so to speak. But seeing the light doesn't usually result in instant change. Old habits die hard, and his habits have had a few million years to form. I hope he struggles with his temper, with the desire to lash out when he's frustrated. I hope he's arrogant. I hope that he has yet to see some vices as such--perhaps a persistent prejudice against organics, as not worth being concerned over. Let's see a real internal struggle in this editing process he talked about in MtMtE.

I was expecting to enjoy Megatron's switch, but I have to say, even though I can't put my finger on exactly why, I'm loving it even more than I thought I would. With only two issues into his role as captain, I realize there's still plenty of time for the dynamic to change and grow, but I'm really surprised to see how calm and collected he is behaving up to this point. Either Megatron is doing an exemplary job of keeping a lid on his violent/emotional side (possibly under threat of punishment), or the cessation of the war has been a major stress-release for him, allowing the more even-keeled, thoughtful Megatron to shine through.

As a side-thought: does anybody else think it would be cool/funny/interesting if Ratchet allowed Megs to shadow him in the med-bay occasionally, as a response to Megatron's "I wanted to be a medic" line in Dark Cybertron? It's beyond unlikely, I'm sure, but I'd get a kick out of it.

Something I really like about Megs is that...he's STILL Megs. He's harsh, he's detached, he out and out threatens Trailcutter. But we also are reminded (and its not additions to the character, these things have been present since day one) that he is a philosopher, a strangely talented diplomat and someone who has spent 4 million years carried by hate...and has had that crutch pulled out from under him. It's facinating to watch the quite dictatorial captain of the Lost Light interact with "Ratchet the incurious" and see both the old and the new.

What I want to see is how Megs reacts in violent situations, or if he is properly challenged.

Indeed. Perhaps Ratchet has prescribed EnerXanax, which allows Megatron to retain his edge, but without being so quick to eviscerate.

The true test will be direct, unhindered contact with Starscream.

I'm echoing what a bunch of other people have said here. I love where Megatron is going, but I do want to see how he struggles, or resolves, what he was. I don't want to see a clean switch where he goes from someone who would "happily wade through a sea through of oil and grease and bodies just to crush the last Autobot spark for pleasure" to this collected, self controlled captain of an Autobot ship. I want to see what happens when his back is to the wall, or when his violent side gets triggered. Watching how he chooses to deal with it, that would make for some interesting storytelling.

The cool, collected part doesn't really bother me. Megatron wasn't always a raging monster. It worked well when he was depicted as the cold planner, the cold-blooded mafia Don. It only bothers me if he tries to get chummy with the autobots, shows compassion in every decision, becomes a Captain Kirk. Fortunately, the presentation so far is promising in this regard.

Well the great thing about Megatrons turn is that for one, it works. Secondly it also opens up some many great storyline possibilities.

So far it's about what I'd expected. We're still reading Megatron, but a Megatron who's given up his War. I'm also liking how Roberts isn't focusing on Megatron as a point of view character, but is instead we're seeing him to the eyes of others.

Skids and company are doing their little newspaper that has the headline of Megatron and Magnus about to go at it, and instead in truth it's Magnus blowing his top and Megatron just sitting there smiling.
