USS Enterprise inactivated in Norfolk | WJLA.com

It's sad to see such a storied ship prepared to be dismantled (they have to essentially rip the ship apart to decommision her 8 nuclear reactors). My wife is a Nuclear Engineer and I'm an Aeronautical Engineer, so we are both a little sentimental towards this ship. Also, my cousin's dad was an officer on her back in the '80's.

But, there is some good news. The Secretary of the Navy, during the inactivation ceremony, made the announcement that CVN-80 will be the next USS Enterprise!

I think there will always be a US vessel named Enterprise, either on the sea, or hopefully in space in the future ( besides the shuttle prototype)

The Enterprise was stationed in Alameda for most of my childhood. Thanks to lots of "Navy dads" among my friends I was able to tour the ship and hang out there many times. It's sad to see it go.

sad day but i am glad the name Enterprise will live on and its storied history will continue, its legacy stretches from battles of midway and coral sea to Korea and Vietnam to the wars in the gulf while the ship changes the name Enterprise has always stood for greatness.

I live (and do most everyday things) near Enterprise, Alabama. as a goofy kid, i thought it was cool to have a ship out there with my hometown's name on it.

now, i am just sad to see a good ship call it a day.

i haven't heard what they will do to her. i hope they don't sink her and put her to use as a dive reef.
i doubt i could bear to watch them blow it and see her sink.

Yeah she joins the Kitty Hawk, Saratoga, and the JFK but we're getting newer, more advanced ships of the line, so it's a fair trade off.

It'll be sad to see the old girl go......

But think of a nice new shiny Nimitz class carrier with the Enterprise name.

Apparently you read past this part.

Enterprise will always be with us. It's a proud name with a proud lineage in American naval history.

Oh, I read that part already. It's just that I'll never see the Enterprise that's 51 years old.

Hoping the Enterprise after CVN-80 is a NCC-1701

I've read at first there will be U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford and U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln and then a new U.S.S. Enterprise.

FYI. When a ship is retired, it's called decommissioned. REven in Star Star Trek. :)

As it is said before, there will be another ship to carry the name. There is too much history in it.

I think the name is an exception to the naming scheme to aircraft carriers. They normally are named after people in the US Navy.

When it comes to Subs and Carriers I believe there is a legacy program in place, in which names are re-used again because Carriers are the flagship of a fleet ( im former Army, so please Squids dont keel-haul me if I am wrong) And then those sub provide cover to the flagships

It's sad that the Enterprise can't be turned into a museum ship, but, considering what has to be done to remove the reactors, I'm not surprised. The ship served this nation for over half a century, and has earned her retirement.
