But then I would actually have to watch or read the media that I use to justify all my toy purchases instead of just reading a wiki page and calling it a day.

I know about most Transformers franchises and got into them thanks to a friend showing me the wiki. Long story short, it's very useful even with these flaws. In fact, the flaws mentioned in this "distorted truth" post date back to a long time ago.

Edit: I see this as embarrassing now. Pay no attention.

It's useful, sure, but it shouldn't be your main source for information. the Wiki's especially bad for the Japanese side of things, trying to read anything about Car Robots or Japanese Unicron Trilogy on there just fucking sucks balls.

And you know what the craziest part is?

The ATT post that started this whole mess in the first place was in response to a discussion thread I had started, questioning the validity of various claims by another longtime member of the fandom (now decased) who had a reputation of making grandiose claims about all sorts of fantastic backstory materials which he had pulled right out of somewhere the sun never shines.

And as we were disecting his wild claims, along comes Derik with his own wild claims, which manage to stick.

Aww, I liked the idea of all the Sideways being the same dimension hopping herald of Unicron.

Plus it was nice to see Robotmasters get referenced. It was always my favourite subline.

First off, props to OP for going full-force on it. I'm don't have a ton of interest in the cross-universe kind of stuff, but I can respect the work.

Honestly, it's not having wiki-writers (or any other fan) making official stuff that's the issue so much as letting people just put out "jot notes" in things such as Ask Vector Prime as fiction. As convoluted and silly as something like the Alternity or Legends Manga are, they at least tell a story while making their sillier claims. It's the difference between writing a full story about Twintwist and Topspin in G1 versus just posting a paragraph saying that they were just off on some other planet.

In all honesty, I don't get worked up about it just because none of it really influences the actual self-contained fiction - knowing that ROTF Sideways is connected to some other versions somehow doesn't really change his 10 seconds of time in ROTF. The only connection I consider interesting to explore is how Armada and Cybertron Sideways may (or may not) be connected.

Yeah, I think that's the bigger issue with media like Ask Vector Prime. I'm not gonna begrudge any fan who works on this franchise, I love it and I'd adore the chance to work on it, but it's easy to just throw out whatever when you can just write a small paragraph about how "Oh, the Autobots who showed up without any reason in Season 2 had a turbulent saga escaping Cybertron to rejoin the main crew of the Ark on Earth" or something along those lines and not have to expand on it. I still loved the page and I enjoy what they did with it, but I think those larger concepts are better explored by other media. Ideally just some short prose stories to expand on some of this stuff, or more interesting "jot notes" in the form of data logs, like the one we got for the Wings Universe through Tornado, Ferak's Targetmaster. Some sort of framing to prevent the writers from dipping into whatever continuity they want to say whatever they want (and gets past Hasbro verification processes, whatever those may look like).
