Superman Movie in 2025, Batman & Robin Film Part of DC Universe Slate - Variety

James Gunn and Peter Safran's new approach to DC properties in live-action will see a new cinematic introduction to Bruce Wayne / Batman and Damian Wayne / Robin in an upcoming film partly based on Grant Morrison's 2009-2011 Batman and Robin comic series. No release date has yet been set for The Brave and the Bold.

The New "DCU" General Discussion Thread

This entry, which is apparently set to be part of a revised shared universe, will be separate from Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's The Batman Part II, which is currently set for 3 October 2025.

    The Batman 2

And it is not to be confused with the 2008-2011 animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Just from the sound of it I expect it to be more lighthearted. It would be nice if they have the tone of Batman the Animated series with the Batfamily stuff.

Not if Damian is in it. That kid is a kill joy and all writers know how to do is write him as a little brat who never learns and when he doesn't get his way start trying to kill people. I would have started with around the time of a Lonely place of dying from the comics. Right after Jason Died and Dick is Nightwing. Tim Drake is introduced and rather than trying to become Robin spends most of the story trying to get Dick to go back to being Robin. He wouldn't officially become Robin till a year or two later.

Also The reason Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin worked so well is it wasn't Bruce and Damian, it was Dick and Damien. A lighter jokey Batman and a killjoy Robin. Bruce and Damian never work well because it's dark and broody with Dark and even Broodier.

I will keep an open mind on this generally.

Though I feel it's too early perhaps for Damian, and they should have tried one of the earlier Robins: Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake. Then again, Damian means bringing in Talia and Ra's al Ghul, which would be cool.

I'll stay open-minded about this but I'm generally not a fan of Bruce and Damian working together. Damian works better with someone like Dick.

Yeah, it can work but Damien and Bruce together are just two grumps trying to out do one another.

Those are some of the reasons I like Damian, but I'll accept I'm in the minority. Looking forward to more news.

Damian? No thanks. I had enough of his bullshit in the Injustice series.

Put Damian on the Titans under Dick's leadership. Bounce him off the generally lighter (and more experienced) cast of the Titans and have him grow by learning to value them as a team. Or a full Batfamily story where Bruce has all of them at his side and give Damian meaningful interactions with them. Anything but an edgy brat who fails to learn and change no matter what he goes through.

Damian can be great if you make him the comically serious (like his father can be at times) foil to a lighter character. It's why he works so well with Jon.

Shame. I totally would've loved a big-screen adventure for Batman: The Brave And The Bold with that stunning animation and the whipsmart writing. Heck, have NPH return and have a musical sequence, even. *sigh* What could've been.

But this? Nah. I'm good. Hard pass. With a hammer.

I'm sure they're doing Damian because he's the current Robin. The comics and the movies would be viewed as being synergistic when it comes to sales, with one fueling the other. Having Dick, Jason or Tim be Robin would confuse a 6 or 7 year old who saw the movie and wants to buy some comics...and vice versa, a kid who has been reading the comics with Damian as the primary Robin would probably scratch his/her head if they walk back to Jason or Tim.

That means nothing when Marvel had Captain America movies Bucky or Falcon was cap. During Thor movies it was Jane. During Iron Man 3 Tony was dead and replaced by Ruri. Tim was Robin during Batman Forever. They are doing it because for some reason they are always obsessed with grim dark storylines, and they don't get much Grimer than Damian. Also there has been a trend in Hollywood to focus on more recent stories rather than classic ones that sold far more issues and are better remembered by fans.

Still I'll wait for a trailer or at least a plot synopsis before I condemn it. But this type of news isn't the type of thing that fills me with hope.

I see your point, but FalconCap and Jane Thor debuted right after CA:WS and Thor:TDW while Riri debuted 3 years after Iron Man 3.

I think Bruce and Damien can work (especially with existing Bat Family members which I believe they've confirmed will appear) if they go with a more lighthearted Batman which I think they will do to distinguish him from Reeve's Batman movies. Does seem like something Gunn would be interested in showcasing.

The more lighthearted take I think of when they say they're inspired by Damian Wayne and Grant Morrison :)

A good answer, but inspiration IMO can come from what something is AND what it is not.

Just because something starts out a parody of an existing material, doesn't mean it can't develop into its own version of that source material. Shrek is my main example of this: it's a Disney fairytale parody, but is its own fairytale too.

Damian seems like the best choice for providing relationships from a storytelling perspective and sets up an established world full of existing characters that can be spun off into other movies/shows. It also means they don’t end up rehashing the same Robin story over and over as Batman takes in a young boy, trains him, learns to love and watches as he grows to become his own man/get beaten to death with a crowbar before starting again.

I’m kind of in the same boat. I’m just exhausted by it now. Is this just going to be a “pick someone new” every time type media. No thanks. At least bond films generally keep the same actor for 3-4 movies and then move on.

Changing actors every film just kind of takes me out of it. I’d rather just stick to the comics, and by that I mean everything up until blackest night for me

Like cool, the DC universe gets a fresh start on actually being a universe in the first place.

But, again, instead of building it up properly we have Batman already jumping to Damian, when the first 3 Robins are FAR better characters and storytelling machines than Damian will ever be.

Throw in Creature Commandos and The Authority and we have this really weird start to this universe.
