Is it weird that I like this more than a lot of the full-on robot concepts? It has a lot of character to it.

Yeah, I like the finished on-screen version better, but as a starting point it's not bad.

I wonder if these designs get made "in bits", that is, they design a leg, then a head, then an arm, and then just plop them together at the start and mix and match the pieces. That optimus seems like his torso/limbs/head don't quite match up, but its interesting how the joints were designed a lot lighter than the final version. I think adding "weight" to the body is a common thing we've seen for several characters as they moved from concept to on-screen appearance.

 

Wow. I really gotta hand it to them; there's a lot of texture detail there.

I quite like this one. It's athletic and fit, not fat and dumpy like the final design.

In my opinion if the bumblebee movie had been 100% prequel, this design I think would have been perfect for the movie since it has more similarities with the ww2 and camaro 77 version as in the first michael bay movie, but well we all know that at the end the movie ended up being 90% reboot, but I like this design ... maybe it's because I'm a fanboy of the design of bee in the bayverse .. I do not know.
