From Stephen Zavala's post on Arcee:

Yes! Thank you! I've been saying all of this forever. This quote should be framed and hung all around Hasbro's design department. I'm sick to death of overly feminine body-types and high-heels on female Transformers. It feels super dated, and makes me cringe at this point. As he said, it was definitely a product of the time. I wish we could get designers with this sensibility working in other mediums like comics and cartoons. The fact that Cyberverse has a Decepticon (Lugnut-lookalike) with purple lipstick in 2019 is just baffling to me (especially since that character is based on a design that lacked a mouth). You can make your female robots feminine without being blatant (or even downright stereotypical) about it.

Right there with you buddy, they're supposed to be soldiers after all, just don't see the practical application for high heels on a war zone. Gotta love the Arcee and Shatter design :)

It's pretty cool design overall, but Arcee's face gives me nightmares.

I don't know. Are colored lips really sillier than a robot having a feminine shaped body for no reason?

Wheeljack looks kinda punky. Loving Arcee, Ironhide, Shocky, Ratchet and Ravage.

Of course this is all concept art. In the film he’s much nicer.

Really? I thought the face was fine, not too feminine yet not too weird like ROTF which had a light influence on the design, it's probably the Nizzi elements that makes her look kinda funky, yet not enough to get people nightmares, but I get your point man :)

It’s very eye catching. I feel though if we see her express her face more it’ll look nicer.

Body shapes can be a good way to indicate gender, as long as it's done subtly. This also goes for males. You kind of want Optimus to be strong and masculine-looking. They can take it too far though.

I find things like colored lips and heels very dated. Maybe done sparingly, but I find it really tacky that almost all female Transformers have to have colored lipstick (especially when we're talking about designs like 'not-Lugnut', who's face isn't even that humanoid). It would be like giving all male Transformers beards and mustaches. Even Bay understood to vary it up, and only give it to characters who it fits.

Oh nobody did, I just... actually I dunno.
I think the lipstick thing is pretty much gone now. Apart from female Lugnut. I dunno. I don’t find it as big a problem. And even to the day it isn’t as bad. And much like this arcee we can see there is still a push to identify the characters with more subtle design in the body and face.

Arcee's little pinprick irises look hella creepy against her all dark eye sockets.

She really should've had full blue eyes like OP and BB.
