To continue my "Prove me wrong" trend, I have picked a comic started this century... that is from 2000 onwards, that is mind numbingly incredible.

All you need to do, is prove me wrong by choosing something better and telling me why it is better.

    I pick: Invincible.

A well kept secret in the Image stable, Vangelus prodded me to take a look. I picked up #1. Read it. Went and got the other 4. It's great writing, great art, great colouring. Kirkman is going to be big someday, really big, and this is where he really shows his stuff.

Yes, it's better than the Walking Dead.

For me, it would be a tie between two of Warren Ellis' works: The Authority (first 12 issues) and Transmetropolitan (whole series).

The Authority was Ellis' attempt to take a stereotypical superhero team, and make their actions as hardcore, extreme, and over the top as he could, without sacrificing the humor or fun. Definitely the first time I can remember that a superhero defeated scores of enemies by transmuting them into men's cologne. Ellis' departure turned the book into a graveyard for a while, but Coup D'Etat and Revolution have put the series back on top.

Transmetropolitan: while it's easy to quote all the parallels with Hunter S. Thompson (minus the wussy suicide), the book's real accomplishments were how it neatly summed up everything good and bad about journalism in a single analogy, while simultaneously capturing the mood and spirit of a country struggling under the rule of utterly corrupt politicians (hmm, why does that sound familiar?) -- then tweaking the whole thing with a bowel disruptor. It's kind of sad to think that the finest journalist in the country pre-Katrina was a fictional one.

I really like Authority also, although i would have to stretch that run out to like the first 20 issues rather than just the first ten. Not sure if that entire run is post 2000 though.

Punisher MAX - It has the Punisher, it is written by Garth (Preacher) Ennis, it is actualy an adult title so the Punisher can actually do things the Punisher would really do.

Ultra - The fact that it has guys reading it and ENJOYING it says something

1602 - The first series was fantastic. It was so bizarre and then they spike you with that twist.

New Avengers - Making crappy characters cool (I'm looking at you Cage and Spider-Woman) while making fan favorites even better. And the dialogue boucing off each other is some of the best written. Iron Man keeping up with Spiderman's comments, Logan and Cap squaring off. It's the best team written book out there.

But number 1 is Ex Machina. An ex super hero running the biggest city in the world dispite his varying ideas and hero status. It's sort of like saying "What would I do if I didn't care what people thought and ran a city?"

Punisher was at its best when Steve Dillon was doing pencils. I loved the storyarc where the Russian returned, it was so over the top and just flat out hilarious.

I think that'd cover all of Ellis' storyarcs, and the first two Millar storyarcs (the one with the evil versions of Marvel characters, and the one with the renegade doctor). So it's published within 1999-2000.

Hmm...the 00s is when I started buying and reading a lot less comics, so I don't think I have much to offer in this one. Still, I'll keep the recomendations in mind.

Yeah, that panel of Invincible naming the Avengers based on Spider-Man's name is my favorite part of that issue.
