Yeah, and what's to say Sideswipe didn't show up in AOE because he was incapacitated/deactivated like Optimus at the start of the movie?

This is true. I just came back from my 2nd viewing. It was mentioned that they were all that was left yet they had no idea of what happened to Leadfoot and Ratchet. This leads me to believe that the idea of the 5 being the last is solely down to the fact that no-one else answered the call.
Yes i believe 100% that Sideswipe is indeed alive but the only thing i'm worried about is Micheal Bay is not willing to implement it well...
This. It very well could be as simple as Swipe and a few other not answering the call because "maybe" Swipe thought the OP call might have been a trap and the humans were using OP and or sent out a fake distress call to get them to come out of hiding.
In fact, isnt it odd that Bees group is conformed only by the newcomers while the old outobots as Ratchet or Leadfoot are hiding by themselves? This new guys are the most vulnerable in this planet to "hide" as Optimus asked them to, since they do not know the place at all. And we know as a fact that none of the three fighted in Chicago. So they probably arrieved once shit was going down. In a logic scenario (I know logic is a difficoult word to use in a Bays movie) Drift, Hound and CH are the less likely bots to survive the hunt. So yes, Im going to believe that many of the others are just hiding, with their radios turned off as protection.
I don't want to be mean or something, but I believe and kinda hope Sideswipe is dead. I don't have enough sympathy for him, but that's not the reason I want him dead. I want them to keep just the surviving Autobots from AoE. I want them to be more developed, 'cause they have potential. I just think Sideswipe wasn't used how he should. Or have a well developed character, or don't have it at all. Either way, I wouldn't dislike his return, but if he's actually an important character somehow.
Or you know... they could just bring him back and actually give him more dialogue and screentime.... therefore developing his character...
His death was off-screen. He was supposedly later smashed to pieces by Ratchet in some comic or book lol. However Bay did say, "If you didn't see it happen in my movie, it didn't." Or something along those lines haha
Not unless they scan a new vehicle and change their robot form appearance. (Bee, Prime, I'm looking at you.)
And yet, Sideswipe remains amongst the top sellers (and is a main character alongside Bee in the new cartoon). As does Bee, Prime, Megs, Screamer, both Waves.
In my honest opinion, I can see Hound taking on a new look in movie 5 and surviving but I can see Bay killin off Crosshairs and Drift early on and bring in yet again more new Bots and possibly have a past Bot or 2 like Swipe show back up with new Alt mode looks.
