It's that time of year. Picking GOTY winners. It seems there is always a thread started, this year just later than usual. So, as always, top 5 games of the year. 5. Assassin's Creed III While the game does have its fair share of problems, it doesn't diminish the excellent story or the characters. Roaming around during the American Revolution was something I had been looking forward to for a long time, and this game didn't disappoint in that aspect. Yes, it was glitchy, but I never had any major problems when I played, and enjoyed the overall experience. It could have been better, but I still greatly enjoyed it. 4. Hitman: Absolution This game seems to have been overlooked this year, and I cannot understand why. With stealth games being so popular as of late, I would have that this would have gotten more love. Oh well. Solid story, love the freedom of choice, and the gameplay was so fluid. Some add-ons made it too easy, like his detective vision from Arkham City, but I didn't feel it detracted too much from the game. I honestly feel like it's the best Hitman to date, even with the changes, mainly because it feels so much more fluid. 3. Mass Effect 3 That damn ending. Take that out, GOTY. With the ending, however, I just didn't like the game like I did ME2. While the culmination of all your choices was fun to see, it left a lot to be desired. I also felt like the campaign dragged at times, which is something I didn't feel about ME2. I still loved the game, and it might have been my unrealistic expectations, but it was a great game that I wanted to be better. 2. Max Payne 3 I never expected to love this game as much as I did. This is the best pure third person shooter I've ever played. The graphics added so much to the atmosphere, the story was incredible, and it just caught me completely by surprise. 1. Borderlands 2 The humor, the characters, the guns, oh the guns. This game, man. The story was meh, but there is so much to do, so much to find, so much to laugh at, I can't not love it. Gaming has become so overwhelmed with FPS's that this game shines because it isn't in the cookie cutter mold. It's different, it's fun, and I haven't enjoyed a game more than this one this year.
2012 was a terrible year in gaming IMO, especially compared to last year, since it had a lot of great games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, The Witcher 2, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Dark Souls, or Kirby's Return to Dreamland. My top 5 games of 2012 are: 1. Kid Icarus: Uprising 2. Mark of the Ninja 3. Sleeping Dogs 4. Xenoblade Chronicles 5. Skullgirls Honorable mentions are: Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, La-Mulana, Spelunky and Double Dragon Neon
I haven't bought many games this year, but I'll try. 1. SSX 2. Fall of Cybertron 3. Soul Calibur 5 4. Sonic 4 Episode 2 5. Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed And my favorite pre-2012 game played in 2012: The World Ends With You And before I get any hate for not having ME3 on here, I didn't put it here because I have still yet to play it...
10. Nintendo Land 9. Rock Band Blitz 8. Rhythm Heaven Fever 7. Spelunky 6. Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy 5. Forza Horizon 4. Halo 4 3. The Walking Dead 2. X-COM: Enemy Unknown 1. Journey
Journey was my GOTY. It was a fantastic experience, looks amazing, and the audio work is outstanding. The Grammy nomination is well deserved. Other than that I can't really remember anything else I've played beyond the last two months, which just goes to show how memorable those games must've been.
Didn't really play that many games this year, but in no particular order: 1: Mass Effect 3 2: Persona 4 Golden 3: Zero Escape Virtue's Last Reward 4: Tales of Graces F
Red dead redemption. I don't buy many full price console games. Out of the games I bought this year this was my favorite. For an actual game to pick that's a 2012 game for console it would be Nintendo land because it the only 2012 console game that I got this year. For portable it would be Pokemon white/black 2.
my top list would probably look like 4.Assassin's Creed 3-it has been so enjoyable running around Revolutionary America and getting to interact with the founding fathers has been awesome for a history buff. 3.Borderlands 2-improved so much from the original, and the inclusion of a more rounded out plot, with what has been one my favorite villains in awhile with Handsome Jack. 2.Mass Effect 3-Honestly not as bothered with the ending as a lot of others seemed to be. Regardless, it was ending to an amazing trilogy and one of my favorite game series. 1.The Walking Dead-I know it was just mostly point and click, but the story was just incredible and I can't think of too many games this year that hit me as emotionally as The Walking Dead did.
10. FTL 9. Darksiders 2 8. Spec Ops: The Line 7. XCOM: Enemy Unknown 6. Rock Band Blitz 5. Persona 4 Golden 4. Max Payne 3 3. Sleeping Dogs 2. Journey 1. The Walking Dead
There's a few games I suspect could be in my "best of" list that I just haven't played yet, like Halo 4, Dishonored, Max Payne 3, Last Story and New Super Mario WiiU. I also haven't beaten Assassin's Creed 3, so I don't want to count it just yet, but I will admit that the bugs are leaving a bad taste in my mouth. From what I have played and finished... 6. Double Dragon Neon- You have to play this for a while before it all sinks in, but when you do, you realize just how fun and humorous the game is. Also, super amazing soundtrack. 5. Fall of Cybertron- This was pretty much what I expected- nothing genre redefining, but a good 10-15 hours of Transformers fan service action. 4. Darksiders 2 - Just an all around fun game. Not perfect, but enjoyable with a fairly large, zelda-esque world to explore. Main thing that bothered me was some of the dungeons dragged a little. 3. Borderlands 2- What can I say besides super addicting and fun? 2. Xenoblade Chronicles- This was a surprise for me. I put in almost 200 hours and had probably the best JRPG experience I've had since FF12. In fact, it played a bit like FF12. Great soundtrack, fun battle system, better then average JRPG dubbing, typical but fun melodramatic JRPG story, characters I liked, visuals that were surprisingly good for the Wii, and a HUGE quest that kept my interest all the way through made this a close call for game of the year. 1. Mass Effect 3- I feel like I need a disclaimer about the ending, but the bottom line is that the ending didn't ruin it for me. The game added a couple RPG elements I liked that improved the combat from part 2, and really, it had some of the most epic scene I've experienced in a video game. I think overall it wasn't as good as ME2, but I still enjoyed every moment and look forward to playing through it at least a couple more times once all the expansions are out. Well, that's my top 6 from what I played. Just to throw a couple honorable mentions out there: Fez- it was fun, but I'm not finished yet so I didn't want to say how good it is in the long run. New Mario Bros 2- 2D marios are always fun, but this one felt a little less inspired then the last couple. Resident Evil Revelations- Graphics I wouldn't think possible on the 3ds and a true Resident Evil feel to it. Sonic 4: Episode 2- Eh, I'm a sucker for Sonic, especially in 2 dimensions. It did improve a lot on episode one, both in visuals and gameplay (thanks for actually having some physics!). Besides that, my ultimate guilty pleasure has to be Final Fantasy: Theatre Rythm. I don't like music games usually but I do love classic FF music and charcarcters. Biggest disapointment- Resident Evil 6! I played it for about an hour and I'm not sure I'm going back.
In no order, Assassins Creed 3 Halo 4 Mass Effect 3 ...thinking about it thats all I've really bought this year >.> Also, post above ^^^ Completely agree on RE6, played my brothers with him for an hour and we haven't gone back.
Halo 4 Borderlands 2 Metal Gear Solid 3 (first time playing the series when the HD collection got an Xbox release, and helped me out of my Mass effect 3 ending induced inability to play to games for while) Black Mesa and last but not least Old Spice | Dikembe Mutombo's 4 1/2 Weeks to Save the World an awsome 8-bit game that took the piss out of 2012, and had some funny moments.
In no particular order: Borderlands 2 Dishonored The Walking Dead Far Cry 3 Halo 4 2011 was a far better year for games IMO.
Also, even though it isn't a full game, I think I need to throw some props to Black Mesa, as it made one of the games of all time even better.
2011 was an AMAZING year for games between Zelda Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3, Arkham City, and more. 2012 was rather dull in comparison, and I found this year was much more of a year for the handheld consoles. Out of the VERY few games I've bought and/or played this year, My top three were, in no particular order: Kid Icarus Uprising This game was, and is great. I still play the multiplayer on a regular basis because of how fun it is, even if it can be a bit unbalanced at times (I'm looking at you, 6 star ranged Darkness Bows and Black Clubs). Once you adjust the controls in the settings menu so you can use the face buttons for camera control, the controls feel spectacular in my opinion. In addition, it's one of the best uses of 3D on the 3DS and the models and environments are excellently detailed and run without lag. Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D This game is amazing. However, that's not saying much since it is essentially a remake, after all. The addition of Subsistence's camera controls as well as the amazing use of 3D (in my opinion the absolute best on the 3DS thus far) all coupled with the amazing story of Metal Gear Solid 3 make this game one that I do not regret at all even though it's already included with the MGS HD collection. The only flaws are the choppy cutscenes and the lack of a second save slot (I like to have one file on a game for a run just to make it through the game, and another to do a perfect run). Crashmo A relatively recent title, however it takes advantage of the simplicity and elegance that last year's Pushmo set into place and adds a simple yet incredibly game-changing mechanic. Despite that the gameplay is still mind-bendingly addictive and is the one puzzle game that managed to pull me away from Pushmo. The customization tools, while not something I use, are still amazing at their core and DAT PRICE. Such a great value!
