    Hello to all!

I was going to wait until I was done to make a post, but I am currently obsessed with this project and no one in my life really understands. They are all like, "oh no, here he comes, I bet he's got another robo change 'em up thingy that he wants to show us."

My first Hardshell sucked. It may as well have been a drawing, because it was only good for looking at, or so I thought...
...I decided to take any useful parts from my first attempt and try to re design the transformation more towards my original intent. Building off what was already there and not there.
The first version had way too many compromises, and ended up being a mess of a transformer, but had a lot of good parts also.

I wanted the robot arms, hands and shoulder pad thingies to be much larger, but it is a lot to hide away in bug mode.
I also wanted the bug mode longer, and the bug head to be much larger, But could not pull it off back then.

I have the design roughed out, and have started ordering/printing parts. I am going to be taking my time with this, but working on it with every moment of my spare time.
My intentions are for it to be epic.

Almost have all of him together, just missing fingers, the middle bug legs that go on his sides, and the transforming bug nose.

He is a bit on the larger side!

You can see the first bug arm segment is attached. they will be able to be articulated in robo mode like the show.

You can see the space for the bug nose

and here you can see that I assembled the bug legs backwards, so the left is right and vicy-versy.
so the tabs slots are on the wrong sides. Oops. I'll fix that next time.

I also have some resin prints of the non-ball jointed shoulder. This is an early version.

A super quick update from work.
You know this is happening, big time!

This is the robo mode so far. I tried to take pics that would show the tabbing action.

Looking good. A lot of it is kinda hard to make out in white plastic but what I understand looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing your progress. And I absolutely understand the whole annoying everybody around you with talk of your latest transformers project. My wife is incredibly patient but I can see her eyes glass over when I start babbling. Doesn't stop me, of course.

BTW, I finally got around to ordering that miniQ resin. They have it in black now, btw, as well as that greenish grey they had before. What was that about ordering parts? Are you not printing them yourself anymore?

    Funzies...
    IMG_20220121_073616034.jpg
Printed the head and jaw just to see them.

    a bit more head articulation
    IMG_20220124_040753773.jpg IMG_20220124_040721961.jpg

More parts put together, more coming this week. Printed some resin parts to check out tab action.

    IMG_20220124_040854696.jpg IMG_20220124_040905410.jpg IMG_20220124_041059093.jpg IMG_20220124_041108133.jpg

Much simpler more efficient transformation on the shoulder pad this time
    IMG_20220124_041137189.jpg IMG_20220124_041142288.jpg IMG_20220124_041147154.jpg IMG_20220124_041230960.jpg IMG_20220124_041246050.jpg IMG_20220124_041254687.jpg IMG_20220124_041305397.jpg

This is the old one, it was 3 arms instead of 1.
    IMG_20220124_041354996.jpg
not really enough parts to hold together the bug mode well, but this is an approximation.

    IMG_20220124_065919533.jpg IMG_20220124_065945012.jpg IMG_20220124_065947690.jpg

Beefing up tabs, and fine tuning tolerances.
I use my resin printers to test early prints, but I will be ordering my parts from A printing service in Nylon. It is such a good material. I have figures from 10 years ago that still fall off the shelf to the floor and are fine.

Probably the most criminally underrepresented characters from the entire show - thank you for giving this swarm some much-needed love. Progress looks amazing already, so can't wait to see this unfold.

Friday update! I got the parts for the new lower leg transformation, but I forgot the 2 most important tabs on one part, so I ended up having to print it.
    IMG_20220128_051002285.jpg IMG_20220128_051006103.jpg IMG_20220128_051032623.jpg IMG_20220128_051059441.jpg

Old transformation- A door opened on the front to allow the leg to extend out.
    IMG_20220128_063747824.jpg IMG_20220128_063821316.jpg IMG_20220128_063927892.jpg IMG_20220128_064023295.jpg IMG_20220128_064048982.jpg

New transformation- Leg splits to allow extension, then compresses down farther upon closing to make the leg skinnier.
    pull the foot down
    IMG_20220128_051131180.jpg IMG_20220128_051139528.jpg
    open the leg
    IMG_20220128_051150329.jpg IMG_20220128_051203546.jpg IMG_20220128_051217863.jpg IMG_20220128_051225660.jpg IMG_20220128_051249361.jpg IMG_20220128_051255027.jpg
Then the bug leg part slides over to un tab, and can rotate up to position and slide back to be tabbed in.
    IMG_20220128_051319191.jpg IMG_20220128_051350295.jpg IMG_20220128_051322092.jpg IMG_20220128_051408662.jpg IMG_20220128_051401780.jpg IMG_20220128_051514416.jpg IMG_20220128_051527534.jpg

Then the leg can be closed and it compresses in tight, tabbing into stuff.

I think that I was running out of pic space! hahaha.
This is the old compared to the new.
    IMG_20220128_064132167.jpg IMG_20220128_064140583.jpg IMG_20220128_064214992.jpg IMG_20220128_064221147.jpg IMG_20220128_064232542.jpg

I also did some detailing on the back, I didn't know what to do, so I tried to emulate the concept art.

Sorry for not having enough time for anything but quick updates. I have been fine tuning, and am now sending the final parts out for printing.

Thanks! To be fair, this is technically just finishing the first project. I feel like I got side tracked by having just learned how to sculpt better and skipped out on the challenge of the engineering to do detailing.
I should have a finished printed version within a month!

I will try to do more "along the way posts!"

Thanks! I should post more pics from Blender. That may show a lot more of the detailing. Congrats on the wife, I guess that I should take designing transformers off of the list of first date topics.
The only thing that I don't like about that resin is that thin walls tend to warp over time.
I mainly use my printer for early test fit parts. I really like the white plastic(SLS nylon) from the print services.
I was eyeballing an independent dual head filament printer to do ABS or maybe PETG with soluble supports, but its a good chunk of change, and then my time would be spent fiddling with a 3d printer, instead of designing.

    Thank you!

I agree! I have always liked insecticons, but the TFP insecticons are just awesome.

Thanks! I am giving it my best, and I think it will be cool! more to come soon!

I should have a final figure to show by early March!

I have also designed a non-connected back toe version, because I have seen it both ways, and someone may have a preference.
It also does not need a ratchet, the friction is more than enough, and can be adjusted with the turn of a screw, which I like. Ratchets are cool, and that version will be there too, but not everyone wants to print all that if not needed.
I printed it at 2/3rds scale to save time and resin- super frickin' cute!
    IMG_20220209_073834084.jpg IMG_20220209_073844898.jpg IMG_20220209_074045522.jpg

There is a "joined" back toe non-ratchet version as well.

I have also been tinkering as an afterthought, and I am pretty sure that I can work in the nose gun to the current design.
I plan to print some try out parts in the next few days! Very excited for this one!

Quick print of the nose gun transformation idea.

    IMG_20220211_073950171.jpg IMG_20220211_073958927.jpg IMG_20220211_074023074.jpg

    IMG_20220211_073900768.jpg IMG_20220211_073830275.jpg IMG_20220211_073847906.jpg

So, i was rushing and didnt take a few critical pics.
After the nose front rotates down in the third pic, you can lift the panel up and back, then the nose front rotates back up.

    Here is the controversial part...
Then you remove the nose front and cannon and turn it around 180 and put it back in place.
I am considering it "weapons storage" as opposed to parts-forming, as it has nothing to do with the transformation, just an extra.
I am interested to see how people feel about that.
The original nose without the gun gimmick will also be available for those not interested.

    Thanks!
What a great Idea! What about an non transforming, troop building(at least three, right?) articulated version. It would take some serious tinkering, especially to take full advantage of the fact that it doesn't transform. It would be way less parts, and could have better/ideal joints. Do you design at all? I could shoot you some parts if you want to try it. I will probably do it at some point, but I am bouncing between multiple projects right now.

I was rushing for sure on those!

Updated pics on the first post, almost there!

I'd be happy to give it a shot! The non-transforming idea is great.
The fact that it transformers blows my mind but I'd be down for a non-transferable version just to army build a couple to go along with my lil vehicon army
