I wish they'd relax with the gimmicks and work harder on the paint apps.

Maybe every figure will have a removable face. That way, whether friend or foe, Optimus Prime can continue to add to his collection. He's really only two steps away from becoming the Leatherface of Transformers (no chainsaw, and he doesn't wear the faces...yet).

As for a real gimmick, probably just something similar to the past two gimmicks. Though I can easily see pop-out weapons in alt-mode being used (what with the nascar-bots).

My Ideal, and I know it won't fly because kids like "gimmicks", is that they spend their budget on good mold design, great paint apps, articulation and accessories.

But the less-than-ideal, would probably be some kinds of gear rotation gimmick >.>

a vehicle from the movie that when you move some parts around resembles a robot from the movie, done the best possible way that modern science and engineering will allow.

I don't think that would work - who'd buy something that... ordinary...?

What if whole parts of the toy were like rub signs that were indistinguishable from the rest of the parts, but when you handled the toy the heat would change to "reveal/create" battle damage. and then when you put him aside he'd "heal?" I would totally buy that.

What if the mini version of the other hasbro toy was a minicon? like that tiny robot scanned a child's toy on arriving to earth?

Damn that sounds cool. The ROTF characters get all this damge on them, and when Hasbro wants to recreate it, they have to make a whole new damn toy! I'm tired of that, so this idea sounds epic.

This early on I'll say either some slight variation on Mech Alive, like a piece that spins when bot mode snaps together after getting wound up by transformation, or pop-out/snap-on spring-loaded weapons for vehicle mode.
