I know this may seem irrelevant at the moment since tf prime but it could happen what are your ideas on how it could possibly could or could not work.

It could work if the creative team were people who actually knew TF lore and cared about the characters.

    Agreed.

Hmmm I'm not sure the movie aesthetics would translate very well into an animated format though.

I think it should just be a reality series following Michael Bay's struggle to find new and exciting ways to blow stuff up.

Just seems like you'd have to do a lot of weeding out to make the whole thing work. Or then you'd have to really adjust things so the Decepticons were not so weak and easy to beat.

Right now I think Transformers Prime might be on to the right idea. Start fresh so you aren't bound by the rules from anywhere else, but then you are also free to pick up any ideas from other places without all the extra baggage. Might be better that way to just pick the parts they like and leave the rest behind.

Think of Terminator SCC's. Only one season.

Ha ha, yea I do enjoy how even the smallest things are considered fanwank now. I'm sure Thor having a hammer in his movie next summer is just fanwank by this attitude that any tribute to the past is somehow wrong.

The way I see it, Transformers is a franchise that thrives on new interpretations of the established lore. It wouldn't be around if not for the fact that they keep reinventing it every few years.

Fanwank would choke it to death.

I'm surprised that having a character named "Optimus Prime" who is leader of a faction called "Autobots" isn't considered 'fanwank' that could alienate the average movie-goer and threaten the success of the films.

I kinda figured TF Prime fit the bill as "movie spin-off series" pretty well.

TF Prime is more of a spin-off of War for Cybertron and Exodus.

Let's face it, everything in TF fandom that isn't G1 is a G1 spinoff.

I think it would be just as bad as the terminator "sarah chronicles."

I always felt that the Transformers Movie franchise could be cool if done in a TV series. For example, they could do one with NEST, and have a "villain of the week" style thing where they go to different places, find the Decepticon(s) and bring them down.

While I agree that too much fanwank would be a bad idea because it would make it too hard for new people to pick up I don't find every nod to the past to be fanwank.

If we went by the way some fans describe fanwank then anything that has any tie to the past is fanwank. For some odd reason they think the only way to do things is to totally alienate the old fans so that it is about nothing but the new fans. Somewhere the old fans money just stopped being money or something.

On the other extreme you've got the people who would choke off anything new at all which would kill any growth to the Transformers universe. To these people there is only one way to do things so heaven help the poor sap how wants to something as small as update the alt mode of a character to reflect there being fewer and fewer cars from the 80's on the road.

Somewhere in the middle are the people who don't see nods to the past as fanwank or the idea that nothing can ever change. So Prime having a trailer in Transformers 3 isn't fanwank it's just a nice nod to the past. Animated wasn't fanwank but a nice tribute to the history of Transformers by putting in nods you could get if you were a fan but would not ruin the show if you didn't know what it was a nod to. That fake script for Transformers 3, now that's what fanwank really looks like.

    Fanwank shpangwank!

    Not enough... too much... alienate...

All academic and speculative. lets see some REAL examples before we all start sounding like the experts that we aren't!
