Those designs there would be pretty cool for a standalone alien robot movie.

    Thanks for the translation SydneyY!
These interviews are fascinating; it's interesting to put names to the toy designers and see how they approach their art. And especially since this was the man responsible for one of my favourite BM toys, Skydive.

I do believe that the one thing that kept the TakTomy side 'silent' to us westerners was the said language barrier. To my knowledge TakTomy have their own panels in Japanese conventions similar to Hasbro. Makes me wonder if our Japanese counterparts think hasbro is 'silent'.:D

The language barrier is a huge factor in what's keeping the fandom apart on an international level. So, props to Syd for another great interview translated for everyone's benefits, and a great one at that.:bay

Thanks once again SydneyY, a fascinating insight.
2 weeks to basically flesh out a design certainly puts into perspective the skill and talent of the designers.

I often think to myself how hard it must be to design something as simple as a deluxe. Then I read interviews like this and think these guys don't get paid enough. Whatever they are getting paid...it isn't enough for what they are asked to do.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who is an engineer, be it the guy who designs F1 engines, or the guy who designs Transformers. They both deserve respect for their mental prowess.

Those Takara people are pretty neat and friendly guys. That was a very interesting read.

And, you can't blame Hasbro for the movie figures after you read this.

Cool. It's nice to see someone on the Takara end of things come out and talk about the difficulties of the design process - budget concerns, etc. There's always a degree of consternation whenever Hasbro mentions having to cut something for budget reasons, so it's good to see that Takara generally agrees with them in that aspect. If it's gotta go, it's gotta go.

Reading that what does Hasbro really do?

    It's all being done overseas.

Does Hasbro actually have someone designing and drawing up the prototypes based here in North America?

Thanks again for the pat on the back, guys! I am happy if more people can enjoy these TakTom staff interviews without the language barrier.

Apparently Hasbro designs the characters themselves, decides the gimmicks and sends sketches of the "basic engineering", like 'HEY TAKARA, THIS IS TFA SWINDLE, HERE'S ROBOT MODE AND THE VEHICLE MODE AND THE ROUGH TRANSFORMATION, ARM-CANNON SHOULD USE SPRING LOAD TO MAKE THE "LIGHTS" CHANGE COLORS, SHOULDER AND STOMACH GUNS SHOULD BE DEPLOYABLE TOO LIEK THIS"

I had no idea they had so few designers. If they only have 8 guys for all the tons of toys...then I guess I'll have to complain a little less when I think a toy wasn't designed well enough.

So thats the guy who designed the new Starscream? Because that thing is awesome!
It's understandable that he had to scrap the folding arm cannon gimmick. Just too many movable parts for a voyager. That thing is already complex as shit. I hope the leader version has em though.
