now that is interesting and very handy! I was sure I'd loose that part, shame it's not mentioned in the instructions.

The robot feet, which are supposed to become the lower abdomen. Instead they transformed it so it looks like he is laying an egg or defacating. Have seen many reviewers do this for some reason

Because both ratchets share that gap for the teeth to separate when they move. If the tab was glued neither ratchet could move because the teeth wouldn't have any space to get out of the way.

I don't know if ratchet joints 'need' that gap at all. That's the point of the spring, to allow the ratchets to work against its pressure, and to 'help' the ratchets turn in each teeth, because it's pushing them out anyway.

When the teeth of two facing ratchet gears move past each other, they spread apart by the height of a tooth. Thus, two ratchets sharing the same space require at least a height of 2 teeth to work, and probably a little extra for tolerance. The spring keeps the teeth in compression so they don't move while engaged. The slot keeps the two ratchet together for rotational movement, but allows the gears to move independently axially.

I'm too lazy to get the box out again but it actually is shown in the instructions, I saw it there.

Yeah but there has to be something surrounding the spring, the two plastic parts (one with the peg and one with the recess) are designed to compress as each ratchet demands compression from the spring that is in turn between these two plastic parts.

If you glued them together at the tab wouldn't there still be enough space either side of them to allow the ratchets to turn, though?

No because the spring is INSIDE the two parts. At least that's my take on it.

You'd have space, yes, but the problem there is that the spring would be unable to do it's job keeping the gears in compression and ratcheting. The whole shoulder joint would just spin freely.

Ah ok, I thought the spring was pushing against the golden parts.

I think I understand the system now. Is there just the one tab, or is there another identical tab on the underside?

The problem is that the ratchets need a slot and a "guide tab" to allow them to move axially and to keep them synchronized when they move rotationally. If you glue the tab in place, the ratchets will not move because the axial movement is restricted.
