Where’s the $200 extra coming from? If we’re being specific, the uptick in price is lower than $200.
More pics just because
Indeed we are all entitled to our opinion and I'm willing to concede that when presented with an image of it looking as large as or the same as it does on MP-44, I don't feel I've seen that yet. However it's all moot if we can agree that just because it was drawn massive once in a while it doesn't mean this looks good or is representative of the generally agreed appearance of the character? I mean we'd all like it smaller right? Are we really fooling ourselves that TT intentionally made it this large because it's show accurate? Surely we all know they did it to 'hide' the voice box and truck parts that are unused in the robot mode. This "it was drawn that big in the show (occasionally) therefore it's show accurate and perfectly fine" is just an excuse in my opinion. I could post just as many, if not more, images of it looking smaller to prove the reverse!
$200 difference? I'm positive MP10 didn't debut in Japan originally at circa $113. Comparing to the Hasbro version that came a few years later is a little disingenuous.
To each his own. The point is there are plenty of legitimate reasons why MP-44 costs more than MP-10 (which is the comment my post was in response to). If you don’t see it, that’s fine by me.
And as for specifics on my #9, I’m not about to go rehashing detailed discussions of economics, product pricing, manufacturing, regulatory impact on pricing, etc.
Maybe we should split this thread into 2:
1) MP44 Updates, information, and general (hopefully somewhat positive) thoughts; and,
2) I hate MP44, I hate how much it is, I hate anyone who likes it or is planning on buying it, I want to talk about how stupid you are for liking it or how stupid you are for not seeing that you are stupid for buying it, I hate Takara, I hate MP, I hate TF.
How about something like that?
Darn he looks great. My body is ready.
Only price I can find in amazon jp is 37,000. Where is this 34,000 found? I see 5 to choose, all same price
Already been done! Go to the toy section for the ‘I come to a hobby forum for enjoyment’ positive MP-44 thread! This is the official ‘I like to spend my free time bashing something I don’t like and aren’t going to buy’ thread.
When you add it to your basket and go through the process it drops to 34,255 yen. At least it did for me yesterday. No idea why but I ain't complaining. Hoping it drops a bit closer to the 30k mark seeing as Nippon Yasan is currently 33,400 yen
I don't think anyone here is denying that MP44 is a much more complex figure with higher parts count vs MP10 . But more like it's very puzzling why does it cost more than twice as much as MP-36 - a figure that is every bit as complex if not more so? The price difference between the two is just too jarring
As I said before, I personally don't think it should cost anymore than MP-36, or at least not more than twice as much .
Yeah, I think I am technically in agreement here; my view is that in order to get all of the other results we toon lovers want, a bunch of truck parts had to go somewhere and the backpack was the least of all evils. And I think that the backpack was more prominent than most people remember even when it was drawn smaller, so MP-44's is not grossly inaccurate here and is still within the parameters of (or on the edge of) the original model profile view. Therefore I view it as a positive thing; they made the backpack a *little* bigger than ideal out of necessity to make everything else perfect.
But technically, yes, I do think the final size is more of a (small) compromise than a goal. To me, it's on the same order as being able to see Sunstreaker's wheels if I look at the bottom of his foot.
There are other retailers other than Amazon.co.jp that are selling MP-44 and they have it listed for 34,000 but when you add shipping, customs charges, and applicable taxes (aka VAT) then the prices are comparable.
Not sure if we done this yet..... but, Number #1 best seller on amazon.jp in hobbies!
(Not my screenshot ... I live in UK not Canada!)
Where are you getting the "$200 more" stuff?
Anybody here insane enough to really pay MSRP for any figure? I know a few did po'ed with bbts/tfs or wherever with the original $450-$500 offering, and we already knew they're insane.
As such, let's see some stuff.
Using amiami pricing,
MP-10 was 21990y ( AmiAmi [Character & Hobby Shop] ) back in 2012.
MP-44 is 38100y ( AmiAmi [Character & Hobby Shop] )
So that's just a 16110y increase differential.
Now factor in the exchange-rates:
exchange rate back in dec/2012 was US$1 == 86.612y (USD to JPY Rates on 12/31/2011 - Exchange Rates)
exchange rate yesterday 2018 was US$1 == 112.76y (USD to JPY Rates on 12/4/2018 - Exchange Rates)
Using above rates,
MP-10 back in 2012 costs $253.89
MP-44 as of today (2018) costs $337.89
About US$84 increase/differential, no?
So, not quite the "$200 more" stuff, ain't it?
That's without shipping-fees. However, if you must, I believe EMS was 5600y or so for MP-10 and CDJ estimates 5900y tentatively for MP-44. Just add accordingly.
I'm excluding VAT and other import fees stuff for non-US/non-Japan deliveries, too.
Of course, most of us here ordered thru AMJ, which is currently about 35,500yen shipped...
edit: 2012 pricing typo fixed.
btw, 2011 exchange-rate was even lower at US$1 = 76.92y (USD to JPY Rates on 12/31/2011 - Exchange Rates) ....
In turn I would agreed with that, although I still attest that that backpack is an eyesore from any angle where you can see it (the Iron-man/superhero landing image being a prime example). Indeed that's was my point a few pages back. For me MP-44 goes too far to achieve extra articulation and toon accuracy than I am comfortable with as I don't require nearly as much of either. It required engineering and a transformation scheme that has led to a robot mode covered in panel lines, hinges, gaps, holes and carrying that massive backpack. To my eye that makes the figure aesthetically compromised. We have all this great articulation and yet so many poses look ungainly and 'break' him up in such a way that the figure no longer authentically represents the characters of Optimus Prime to me...but that is just me.
If you want the Sunbow look and improved articulation and are good with the trade off required for that l I totally get it, I totally understand why you want this. Most of my issues can be chalked up to that and for me at least it aint worth it, especially at the price they are charging. Luckily I still have MP-10 and have been very happy with him for years, and who knows maybe a cheaper version will be released by Hasbro or a KO company that will convince me to take a punt on him and see if I'm won over in hand.
Let's not get carried away. I just clicked on the link which states 21,990 JPY Save 1,770 JPY. So it's a 17k yen difference.
Ami's giving a bigger discount on their MP-44 now than on their MP-10 offering back in the day.
That's a heckuva win for us buyers.
I don't think I (or anybody not insane) will be preordering MP-44 if they only discount MP-44 at the measly 7%-8% like they did with MP-10...
You make a lot of good points even if I'm still firmly in the camp of people who are happy with this design. Yours is the kind of well-reasoned criticism I really enjoy reading to help me think through my own opinion better. I'd even be cool with these kinds of discussions in the "Appreciation" thread (can't speak for others though )!
FWIW I was concerned with Sunstreaker's backpack and panely-ness (mostly from the official product photography, ironically) and in-hand, the issues just simply aren't there for me (others may feel differently). So hopefully you'll get to check out MP-44 in three dimensions too!
Hey @Booster Gold, I’m curious how you feel about MP-29’s backpack? In all your complaints about his size/colour I never saw you once mention his backpack, despite it being much bigger than in his character model (exactly the same case as with MP-44).
Not meant to pick you out, just geniunely curious. Maybe your other dislikes are just causing you to nitpick the backpack? Or the fact that unlike Shockwave, Prime can be put into poses that highlight the backpack further? Poses that you don’t have to place him in, of course
