Totally nailed it! I'd be happy if the real thing is even close to his render!

I wonder how much an MP-44 reissue would be sans:
    • Voicebox
    • Starscream parts
MP-49 is already half the MSRP of MP-44 and lacks the voicebox and trailer.

Did they redesign the back due to lack of voice box or does it still appear to have a speaker?

Sadly not. However as I understand it (don't have MP-44) the transformation scheme would need some modification to down-size the backpack if the voice gimmick were removed, and that's IF the electronics are responsible for it's size and IF that is even possible. Two things I'm also unsure of.

It looks the same. It just has no electronic parts inside. The backpack is unchanged... but I've been told that black is slimming.

From someone who actually owns and loves MP-44, I simply don't see how removing the electronics would want to make TT reduce the GIGANTICALLY YUGE backpack. The transformation is heavily complex as it is.

Then again, and again, I'm no toy engineer unlike many posters here, so.

So I was watching “Attack of the Autobots” this afternoon and took this screen shot. This is really the only time I’ve noticed Prime’s head looking like the season 1 head. Ironically, this is season 2

With the choice they had in the knee ratchets, I'm pretty sure they could have done better implementation of the speaker in the backpack. As the last few masterpieces have shown, they need to consider their QC big time and clearances when transforming the figures. The only exception is Blackarachnia since she turned out to be top notch.

I think it changes scene to scene and episode to episode.

I still don't love the season 1 head... the faceplate is supposed to some up to a point, not be level.

I think I would use the Season 1 head equally as much as the Season 2 head if it weren't for the weird shape they used for the eyes. I always remembered him having hexagonal shaped eyes, not that weird squinty shape. It looks like it has some basis in the cartoon from MSWF377's screenshot, which is to be expected. I don't think Takara would have pulled that out of their ass. But I don't think anyone remembers the character drawn that way which makes the eyes look strange on the Season 1 head. Really too bad, I think it would have been perfect with the eye shape from the Season 2 head. I would have still preferred the Season 2/'86 movie head, but it would at least be close.

Still really loving this figure. If somebody could figure out an easy fix for that wobbling waist, and maybe some yellow labels for his waist bits that chip, he would be nearly perfect. When I put MP-44 next to the other MP scale Primes, this is the one my eyes and hands always gravitate to.

I would've loved an in-between head as he was often drawn with (mouthplate that went straight across), but he was definitely drawn with it angled down often enough to justify the MP sculpt, including the s1 intro. I'm sure they went for the opposite extreme of the blocky upturned s2 head for the sake of variety and differentiation.

Right on, and furthermore I think they were specifically going for the AKOM style with the interview mentions of being able to re-create "City of Steel", and why TT refers to it as "round head" vs "Season 1 head." Of course, part of the reason AKOM drew it that way is because they continued using old model sheets predating even Season 1, etc.

Ah yes, almost forgot they specifically mentioned that ep and being able to recreate his severed head scenes! And very true that AKOM was almost always working from outdated models.

I completely agree. I love the way it was animated early on, but the figure head just has never looked right to me. Luckily I love how the movie head looks on the figure

I don't know why they would want to model any of their products off the AKOM episodes. That style ruined a lot of decent episodes
